Watching General Cao gradually lose the trust of Sima Jin, Yin Keji disguised himself as a prison guard and came to persuade him to defect. After all, plotting to assassinate the commander-in-chief was a serious crime, and the Wei Cang army would never let it go. At first, General Cao sternly refused, believing in his own innocence. However, he thought about his wife, children, and relatives, and in the end, with Yin Keji's help, he managed to escape from prison on horseback.

Chen Yan immediately pursued him and only revealed his true identity when they reached the outskirts. He wanted to use General Cao's severed head to gain Sima Jin's trust. General Cao realized that he had fallen into a trap and would rather die than die at Chen Yan's hands. With a swift motion, he drew his knife and committed suicide, displaying a resolute and heroic end that touched Chen Yan.

Afterward, Chen Yan falsely claimed that he found the antidote on General Cao's body and successfully cured Mu Nan of the poison from Jinghe. Everyone regarded him highly for his actions. Sima Jin believed that Chen Yan was a talented individual who would accomplish great things in the future. He decided to request the court to appoint Chen Yan as the successor to General Cao and reminded him never to show mercy to the enemy, as they would always remain the enemy.

Rather than motivating or awakening Chen Yan, these words reminded him of how Yin Keji often mentioned during their training that not all enemies were irredeemable villains; they were ordinary people protecting their families. However, as a spy for the enemy nation, Chen Yan couldn't imagine how he would face the Sima family if his true identity was exposed.

When Mu Nan recovered from his injuries, Sima Wangyue personally cooked a variety of dishes for him. As he spoke about his previous confession, she was moved but didn't feel romantic affection towards him. So, Sima Wangyue pretended to be clueless and said that in the future, she would have Mu Nan change his surname to Sima, making him forever her good younger brother. Mu Nan understood her true intentions upon hearing this.

Sima Wangyue asked Chen Yan to accompany her on a trip, but the real purpose was to bury General Cao in the outskirts. Regardless of whether he had betrayed or defected, he had made significant contributions to the Wei Cang nation in the past. On the other hand, Wang Wu and the others speculated that Chen Yan's romantic prospects were flourishing and encouraged him to bravely pursue love. The next day, they went out together to choose some tokens of love, finally settling on an expensive jade pendant worth thirty taels.

Since Chen Yan didn't have enough money, the soldiers contributed their savings to help him buy the pendant. Chen Yan was deeply moved and promised to repay them double in the future. Meanwhile, Mu Nan personally cooked noodles to celebrate Sima Wangyue's birthday. The two of them rode their horses to a remote desert to watch the sunset. Sima Wangyue reflected on how time couldn't be stopped but the present could still be cherished, and after speaking, she kissed Chen Yan. Sima Jin, who couldn't find Sima Wangyue in the military camp, asked Mu Nan about the situation. After hesitating for a long time, Mu Nan revealed the truth, leaving Sima Jin infuriated.

On their way back to the military camp, Sima Wangyue and Chen Yan unfortunately encountered a sandstorm, and the situation suddenly became critical. Chen Yan sacrificed himself to save Sima Wangyue, sinking into the quicksand. Sima Wangyue was at a loss and filled with despair, triggering her Phoenix bloodline for the first time and fainting on the ground.

Before long, Sima Jin and Mu Nan arrived with the soldiers to search for them. They discovered Sima Wangyue unconscious, and when she woke up, she urgently pleaded with them to find Chen Yan. Sima Jin ordered them to dig three feet into the ground if necessary to rescue Chen Yan. Wang Wu and the others cried as they dug, unwilling to give up despite knowing the slim chances of success.
