The Empress Dowager cried as she leaned over the coffin, overwhelmed with sorrow that a forty-year friendship had come to such a sudden end. As they exited the mourning hall, Hua Zhi led the whole family to thank the Empress Dowager for her grace. The Empress Dowager was touched by how the Hua family stood together through thick and thin, and she admitted she envied such unity.

Originally, no one came to the funeral, but after the Empress Dowager sent her offering, many people quickly followed suit, eager to show respect at the Hua residence. Shao Yao hid off to the side crying. Shen Huan brought her a bag of puffed rice to comfort her. After taking a few bites, Shao Yao pulled Shen Huan into the mourning hall and placed the rice on the offering table. Hua Xian arrived, but Hua Jing was nowhere to be seen.

So Hua Zhi called Bo Lin and asked him to go to the eldest aunt’s home to deliver the news of Lin Wan’s passing. Bo Lin reported the death at the Song residence gate. Although Song Chengzu was extremely reluctant, since Lin Wan was Hua Jing’s biological mother, failing to observe filial rites could bring accusations of unfilial conduct and affect the future civil service exams of the Song family’s young master.

In the end, Song Chengzu pushed Hua Jing out. Hua Zhi blocked her at the door and made her keep vigil for Lin Wan at the gate. Hua Jing refused, so Hua Zhi exposed her vile deeds in public. This pushed Concubine Qin over the edge—she tore Hua Jing’s outer garment, and Hua Jing fled, clutching her clothes to cover herself.

Hua Zhi turned to the onlookers and declared that from now on, Hua Jing and her children were completely severed from the Hua family and that their affairs would have nothing to do with the Hua family again. While Gu Yanxi was under house arrest at the Shen Pavilion, he refused to eat or drink. Gu Chengtao tried to coax him with his favorite chestnut cake, advising him that the bond between ruler and subject, father and son, was eternal.

He urged Gu Yanxi to let go of his obsession. When Gu Yanxi returned home, he questioned Gu Yanxun whether he had ever loved him. Gu Yanxun didn’t care. He believed that the ruler was the foundation of the subject, the father the foundation of the son, and that nothing could surpass this. Being born into the Gu family meant that true love was impossible.

At the Qisus Division, Chen Qing brought Gu Yanxi the honey cake that Hua Zhi had previously given him and informed him of Lin Wan’s passing. Upon hearing the news, Gu Yanxi rushed to the Hua residence on horseback. He found Hua Zhi at the training grounds. Gu Yanxi openly admitted his identity as the heir and didn’t hide that he was also the commander of the Qisus Division. With red-rimmed eyes, Hua Zhi asked him a series of questions.

Gu Yanxi answered every one of them, without a hint of evasion or deceit. Hua Zhi cried as she said she didn’t hate him—the people who exiled the men of the Hua family weren’t him, and the ones who kicked them while they were down, bullied, and extorted them weren’t him either. She wouldn’t blame him or vent her anger on him. But those ten strokes—she remembered.

Unless Gu Yanxi treated her better from now on, she would come to collect her due. After saying that, Hua Zhi hugged Gu Yanxi. Shao Yao saw Gu Yanxi coming out of Hua Zhi’s room and ran up to hug him in excitement. That night, a servant named Qing Xiang brought snacks to Gu Yanxun, saying they were sent by Gu Yanxi as an apology. Gu Yanxun took a piece and told him to eat it.

Only after confirming Qing Xiang was unharmed and checking his pulse did Gu Yanxun feel safe enough to take a bite himself. Su Momo, Lin Wan’s personal maid, insisted on leaving. Hua Zhi personally saw her off. Before departing, Su Momo gave Hua Zhi the hairpin that Lin Wan had gifted her.
