Hua Zhi’s younger cousin, Hua Qin, was doing embroidery nearby. Hearing Xia Jin‘e praise Shen Qi’s character, she took the initiative to see Shen Qi off, wanting to offer herself to repay him for his care. When Shen Qi refused, she simply threw herself into his arms, saying she was willing to become his concubine. Shen Qi struggled to break free but accidentally slipped and fell, and this scene happened to be seen by Hua Zhi, who had just returned.

Hua Zhi returned the jade pendant to Shen Qi and told him there was no need to come again. Shen Qi alone could not save everyone; what the Hua family needed now was to save themselves. As Xia Jin‘e continued to complain, Hua Zhi entered the house with the books.

She told everyone that she intended to use this matter to show those with ill intentions that even if the Hua family had only women and children left, they would not allow anyone to plunder them. Otherwise, they would fight to the death, even if it meant going to the Qixusi. Hua Zhi handed the "Meihua Yishu" to Lin Wan, who was greatly comforted when she saw Hua Yizheng’s manuscripts inside. Gu Yanxi brought toys to visit Shao Yao.

Shao Yao used her homemade medicine to treat the wound on Gu Yanxi’s face. After being deceived by Chen Zhi, Lin Wan fell seriously ill, and the Hua family was nearly out of food. Xia Jin‘e considered seeking help from the Shen family, as they had not yet come to withdraw the engagement. Upon hearing this, Hua Zhi immediately dismissed Xia Jin‘e’s idea.

So Xia Jin‘e went to find the fourth madam, Wu Yuniang, suggesting they seek help from their respective natal families. Wu Yuniang asked Hua Zhi to accompany her home, but her parents would not even open the door, as her father and brothers were still officials in the court and needed to avoid suspicion. Xia Jin‘e then took her child to her own family. After some hesitation, her parents opened the door and cautiously welcomed her inside.

After learning that Wu Yuniang was pregnant, Hua Zhi picked fruits for her to eat. At that moment, an old woman came out and claimed that the orchard belonged to her. Upon finding out that Wu Yuniang was pregnant, the old woman generously gave Wu Yuniang half a basket of fruits she had picked.

Xia Jin‘e’s parents were willing to give her a large sum of money on the condition that she sever ties with the Hua family and return home to live again as a young lady of her family. However, Xia Jin‘e could not bear to abandon her child, so she refused her parents' offer and carried Huaduo out the door. On the way back, a thief spotted Xia Jin‘e’s earring and snatched one from her.

Shocked, she immediately took off the other one and handed it to her maid, instructing her to buy persimmons for Huaduo. Gu Yanxi instructed Chen Qing to purchase all available medical books for Shao Yao. When he entered the courtyard, he saw Madam Xiao forcing Shao Yao to take medicine. He quickly intervened and told Madam Xiao that it would be better for Shao Yao to remain naive her entire life than to suffer such forceful treatment.

Gu Yanxi carried Shao Yao back to her room. Watching Gu Yanxi’s back as he searched for medicine for her, Shao Yao recalled her childhood memories, recognized Gu Yanxi, and softly called out, “Brother, why did you only come back now? ”Shao Yao said that she was not really sick, just afraid that when she grew up, she would forget her mother. Gu Yanxi told Gu Yanxun that he would find a way to cure Shao Yao’s illness.

That night, Gu Yanxi dreamed of his mother and Shao Yao, followed by the great fire during the self-immolation. He woke up in shock, calling out “Mother! ” At that moment, Madam Xiao entered. Gu Yanxi regretted not being by his mother’s side during the incident. Madam Xiao, with tears in her eyes, told him that his mother would not blame him.

Looking at the scars on Madam Xiao’s hands, Gu Yanxi felt deep gratitude for her rescuing Shao Yao from the fire back then and apologized for today’s events. Madam Xiao reassured him that they were all family and she would not mind. Hua Zhi and Wu Yumei sat on the steps and noticed that the Qixusi surveillance had finally been withdrawn.

Seeing the current state of the household, Hua Zhi felt that they could not wait any longer and had to quickly come up with a solution. The next day, the Shen matriarch arrived at Zihuangju with a letter of annulment. Seeing the Hua family’s situation, she tucked the letter into her sleeve and simply said she was there to visit Lin Wan.
