Brocade Odyssey Episode 31 Recap
> Brocade Odyssey Recap
Ji Yingying told Sang Shisi to calm down and slapped him to bring him to his senses. Yang Jinglan felt distressed for Ji Yingying, and she couldn’t hold back her tears, crying in his arms, unwilling to accept Sheng Dalang’s death. She had thought everything was under control, but Sheng Dalang’s sudden passing caught her off guard. She began to doubt her decisions, not wanting to see more innocent lives lost.
Yang Jinglan comforted her, saying she shouldn’t retreat but must remain strong to lead everyone through this trade route. When Ji Yingying regained her composure, she realized that Yu Linglong and Ji Yaoting were missing. The bandits had captured Yu Linglong and Ji Yaoting, tying them up. Some of the bandits wanted to kill them immediately, but the bandit chief said he was more interested in gaining wealth.
Ji Yaoting mentioned that the caravan carried Yang family silk to distract the bandits. Upon learning that rescuers were approaching, the bandit chief ordered some of his men to guard the captives while he led others to steal the Yang family silk. Yang Jinglan noticed tracks on the ground and suspected it was a deliberate ploy by the bandits. Meanwhile, the regional governor invited General Niu for a meal, reminding him not to be greedy or else face consequences.
General Niu understood the implicit warning. He realized the governor was suspicious of his cooperation with Cheng Fengze and feared that if the matter was exposed, the governor wouldn’t let it slide. Reflecting on their history, General Niu remembered that he owed his current success to the governor’s past support. Ji Yingying instructed her people to prepare traps intentionally, knowing that Cheng Fengze didn’t just bring Chihu along. She wanted to take a risk and test him.
Cheng Fengze asked why she was setting traps, already guessing that Ji Yingying had planned ahead. Meanwhile, Zhao Xiuyuan knelt and prayed, expressing his willingness to shorten his life in exchange for Ji Yingying’s safe return. The bandits attempted to lure Yang Jinglan and his group away, but Yang Jinglan saw through their plan and launched a surprise attack, successfully rescuing Yu Linglong and Ji Yaoting. Ji Yingying and her group reached a cave entrance.
She ordered traps to be set around the carriages to prevent the bandits from acting rashly. The bandits, following them, sent two men ahead to scout and fell into the traps. Seeing this, the bandits assumed the area around the carriages was full of traps and decided to flank from the side. Ji Yingying asked Sang Shisi for help, and after giving instructions, she deliberately walked out of the cave to attract the bandits’ attention.
Chihu and his men were lying in ambush nearby, aiming their arrows at the bandits. When Cheng Fengze saw Ji Yingying leaving the cave, he hurried to follow her. The bandit leader ordered his men to release arrows, and Ji Yingying pulled Cheng Fengze with her, jumping into a trap. Chihu, worried for Cheng Fengze’s safety, ordered his men to fire arrows at the bandits, eliminating them all.
Ji Yingying accused Cheng Fengze of not being honest with her, and Cheng Fengze couldn’t meet her gaze. After climbing out of the trap, Ji Yingying gathered everyone, thanking them for risking their lives to help, as a way to honor their fallen companions. The group rested there, planning to continue their journey the next day. Ji Yingying noticed that Sang Shisi looked downcast, so Yang Jinglan volunteered to check on him.
Sang Shisi blamed himself, believing he was useless and that Sheng Dalang had died saving him. Yang Jinglan encouraged him to face everything with strength, saying that once a choice was made, it shouldn’t be easily abandoned. After their brush with death, Yu Linglong began to believe in love again. Cheng Fengze instructed Chihu to release fireworks as a signal for the Bai Manor people to come and fetch him.
Ji Yingying, unable to sleep, was kept company by Cheng Fengze, who told her a story that was, in fact, about himself. Yang Jinglan later approached Ji Yingying, subtly hinting that Cheng Fengze needed to be truthful with her. Cheng Fengze recalled Ji Yingying’s promise, which he had personally rejected in the past. General Niu learned that Yang Jinglan had gone to Bai Manor to make arrests, suspecting this was a decision from Chang’an.
Cheng Fengze decided not to continue traveling with them, saying he planned to return to Nanzhao. Yang Jinglan mentioned that a letter from Yizhou had arrived, revealing that the foreign merchants had confessed and that Cheng Fengze would be taken back for questioning. Just then, people from the Bai Manor arrived. Cheng Fengze no longer concealed his identity and admitted that his actions were not deliberate.
Yang Jinglan, holding an imperial decree from Chang’an, invited Cheng Fengze to meet the emperor in Chang’an. Cheng Fengze refused, but Ji Yingying pulled him aside to discuss business. Yang Jinglan deliberately objected, but Ji Yingying hoped Cheng Fengze would testify against General Niu, in which case she would agree to go with him to Nanzhao. Cheng Fengze proposed that Yang Jinglan mediate in Chang’an, using the caravan members as leverage. He admitted to smuggling tribute silk with General Niu.
This was exactly what Yang Jinglan had been waiting for, as he had already arranged for Chang’an officials to be present.
