In prison, Lai Luozhi blocked Yan Xing’s way. He intended to use Sun Tan to uncover more people behind him, but Sun Tan, despite enduring severe torture, did not reveal a single word. Yan Xing returned home, contemplating how to rescue Sun Tan. Shen Du came home, noticing Yan Xing's worried state, and proactively comforted her. He expressed his concern for her and assured her that he would help whenever needed.

However, Shen Du knew Yan Xing had her own goals, so he would not interfere hastily in her matters. Feigning the intent to write down the names of those behind him, Sun Tan was given paper and a brush but wrote nothing. Instead, he recalled joyful times and his companionship with old friends. In the end, he used the brush to stab himself in the neck, committing suicide in prison.

The next day, Yan Xing received the news and was deeply saddened. Xu Wan, upon hearing the news, came to visit her, worried that she might blame herself, and came specifically to offer comfort. The Grand Empress Dowager summoned Yan Xing, who was somewhat apprehensive. She had previously asked Xu Nei Si, a servant of the Grand Empress Dowager, to submit a petition regarding Sun Tan, but had received no response.

Yan Xing was uncertain about what to expect from this summons, feeling as if she were walking on thin ice. However, this time, the Grand Empress Dowager did not penalize Yan Xing. Instead, she shared the difficulties she faced, noting that in an era where men were revered, it was challenging for a woman like herself to reach her current status. She also mentioned that Lai Luozhi had visited the previous day and praised Yan Xing extensively.

This only made Yan Xing more anxious; she was unsure of Lai Luozhi’s intentions and expressed that she was not familiar with him and did not understand his motives. Nevertheless, the Grand Empress Dowager had no other intentions; she gave Yan Xing a personal waist token, allowing her unrestricted access. This gesture indicated that the Grand Empress Dowager had placed considerable trust in Yan Xing.

Xu Nei Si escorted Yan Xing out, advising her to remember that imperial favor, though deep as the sea, is also heavy as a mountain, and that the gift of the waist token was a sign of goodwill. Xu Nei Si hoped Yan Xing would understand how to conduct herself moving forward. After leaving the palace, Yan Xing was intercepted midway by Lai Luozhi’s men.

Upon meeting Lai Luozhi, Yan Xing was met with his subtle sarcasm about her boldness, as she had taken on a case even the Minister of Justice avoided. Lai Luozhi implied that Yan Xing was only able to act so boldly because she had the support of the Inner Guard. He told Yan Xing that the Sun Tan case did not affect him and advised her to be clear about the situation. Despite his threats, Yan Xing was not frightened.

Instead, she mentioned that she had recently seen Lai Luozhi’s sister in Yingzhou. Lai Luozhi appeared visibly nervous, quickly denying that his sister had been in Yingzhou, claiming she had been recuperating at home and had not left the estate. Yan Xing did not press further. Afterward, she saw Shen Du come to pick her up and ran toward him happily.

Shen Du had heard about Yan Xing being intercepted by Lai Luozhi’s men and had come specifically to find her. The couple shared information with each other, understanding that the current situation was very complex. They resolved to be extremely cautious with Lai Luozhi and to act prudently in the future.
