After Yan Xing and Shen Du returned home, the warmth of the kitchen filled the air as the two made dumplings together, their laughter echoing through the room, creating a cozy atmosphere. Meanwhile, the Grand Empress Dowager stood alone, gazing at the portrait of the late emperor, her emotions mixed. Time had passed swiftly, and the emperor had been gone for many years.

She reflected on her past, feeling she had made no serious missteps, but a sense of loneliness still lingered in her heart. Xu Wan and others had also returned from their travels. Though they spoke of the bustling world outside, they still felt that nothing could compare to the warmth of home.

The Grand Empress Dowager, understanding their thoughts and sensing their longing for family, ordered more food to be prepared so that this family, like ordinary people, could celebrate the Winter Solstice together and enjoy familial love. Elsewhere, Lu Chuichui and Jiang Langxing were immersed in the joys of winter. They strolled through the snow, with Jiang Langxing offering Lu Chuichui various treats, making her smile brightly. The two, still playful at heart, built snowmen by the roadside, their laughter echoing through the chilly wind. However, this happiness did not reach Lai Luozhi. He stood aside, his expression dark and his gaze complex. After Lu Chuichui and Jiang Langxing left, Lai Luozhi quietly took Lu Chuichui’s snowman home with care but mercilessly crushed Jiang Langxing’s snowman with a single stomp.

Back at his residence, he watched as Lu Chuichui’s snowman slowly melted in the warmth, silently vowing that what belonged to him would never be tainted by anyone else. This scene reflected both his deep obsession with his emotions and his firm hold on his inner world.

Late that night, Lai Luozhi sought an urgent audience with the Grand Empress Dowager, bringing with him shocking news: he claimed to have obtained intelligence revealing that Yan Xing was actually a spy planted by Prime Minister Zhang in Shen Du’s household to monitor his every move. As soon as these words were spoken, Jin Cang couldn’t hold back, stepping forward to defend his niece, Yan Xing, insisting that she was no such lowly person.

The Grand Empress Dowager, displeased by this, scolded Jin Cang, reminding him that after serving at her side for many years, it was inappropriate for him to comment on state affairs. Shifting the topic, Lai Luozhi then mentioned a nursery rhyme circulating in the capital, hinting at the Grand Empress Dowager’s control over governance, and shockingly, this rhyme was said to have originated from Jin Cang.

Jin Cang quickly clarified that he had only played the tune at Prince Xian’s banquet and had not written the lyrics. Upon hearing this, the Grand Empress Dowager immediately summoned Prince Xian, who appeared frightened and repeatedly proclaimed his innocence, claiming he knew nothing of the matter. To quell the unrest, the Grand Empress Dowager ordered Prince Xian to be confined to his residence and assigned Lai Luozhi to thoroughly investigate the nursery rhyme incident.

She also temporarily had Jin Cang detained by the Imperial Censorate for questioning. Shortly after, the agents of the Imperial Censorate stormed the Yan residence and arrested Yan Xing’s mother. Upon learning that her mother had been unjustly imprisoned, Yan Xing was frantic and rushed home, only to find her father and other family members too fearful to act.

Furious, Yan Xing swore to take matters into her own hands, determined to rescue her mother, even if it meant offending Lai Luozhi. Lu Chuichui and Jiang Langxing, upon hearing of Yan Xing’s family crisis, took action. Lu Chuichui quickly found Yan Xing and informed her that Shen Du had already gone to plead for her mother’s release. Yan Xing then went to visit Prime Minister Zhang.

When Zhang inquired why Yan Xing did not directly petition the Grand Empress Dowager for help, Yan Xing humbly replied that she was just a minor official and dared not overstep her boundaries. Zhang, hearing this, said no more but revealed his awareness of her uncle Jin Cang’s efforts to plead on her behalf, emphasizing that Jin Cang had no intention of overreaching, only concern for her.

Zhang candidly admitted that in the past, he had used Yan Xing and others more than he had cared for them, but in this matter, he had done his best. He knew the Grand Empress Dowager had her doubts about Prince Xian and understood that if he personally petitioned, it would only worsen the prince’s situation.

Just as Lu Chuichui was about to leave, she was unexpectedly intercepted and taken away by Lai Luozhi, causing the situation to take a drastic turn.
