Upon learning of this, Zhou Gaolang sought an audience with Fan Xuan. The two had a dispute over the matter of Fan Yu's succession to the throne. Zhou Gaolang discovered that during Fan Yu's three-year stay in Youzhou, he indulged in a dissolute lifestyle, neglecting his studies, frequently getting drunk, venting grievances, and associating with a woman of questionable reputation who was over ten years older than him. He was deemed unsuitable for important responsibilities. Zhou Gaolang pleaded with Fan Xuan, stating that the crown prince is the foundation of the country and should not be chosen based solely on familial ties. He requested Fan Xuan to select a capable and virtuous successor from among the relatives of the Fan family to safeguard the state.
