Song Yan heard Jiang Yu mention how his father had taught him to be an upright person. He smiled bitterly and said that his own father had also educated him in the same way. That night, lying in bed, Song Yan recalled what had happened in 1999. His father, upon seeing a colleague being laid off, couldn't help but advise him to be more optimistic. However, when he returned home, he found his wife heavily made up and ready to go out again. Song's father knew that she must be going to the dance hall again and begged her not to go to such a shady place. Instead of listening to him, his wife blamed Song Yan's father for lacking ambition. She pointed out that other husbands at his level were thriving, but he was becoming more and more pathetic. Song Yan was left speechless by his wife's words and could only obediently stay at home with their son, eating fruit.

After a few days, due to work-related issues, Song Yan's father was also framed by a deceitful person and ended up being laid off. Without any hesitation, Song Yan's mother packed up her things and left in another man's luxury car. From then on, Song Yan's father spiraled into a state of despair, drowning himself in alcohol. One winter night, he passed out drunk leaning against their front door. A young Song Yan woke up in the middle of the night, groping his way to the door to find his father. He discovered his father with his head drooping, clutching a bottle of alcohol, motionless. Covered in snowflakes, Song Yan called for help from the neighbors to carry his father inside, only to realize that his father had frozen to death. Afterward, he moved in with his aunt. Over the years, his aunt treated him well, but whenever he saw other families happily together, Song Yan couldn't help but feel a pang of envy.

Song Yan and his fellow firefighters worked together to remove a wasp nest. Unfortunately, they accidentally got stung by the wasps. His comrades took Song Yan to the hospital, where Xu Qin happened to be the doctor treating him. The area that got stung was his buttocks, which made Song Yan feel embarrassed. However, Xu Qin, being a doctor, professionally and gently removed his clothes.

Meng Yanchen brought a box of milk to the hospital to visit Xu Qin. On the way, he bumped into Song Yan and several other firefighters. Meng Yanchen couldn't help but stop Song Yan and remind him to be mindful of his identity. He also mentioned that there was an insurmountable wall between Xu Qin and Song Yan. He claimed that his specialty was tearing down walls, so any obstacles or misunderstandings between him and Xu Qin were insignificant. This time, Song Yan looked Meng Yanchen in the eye and advised him to introspect and stop being so quick to judge others, as he had never properly looked at his own inner self. Since he was Xu Qin's older brother, he should exercise some restraint and not exert excessive control over Xu Qin.

On Meng Yanchen's birthday, Xu Qin went home early to celebrate with their parents. They blew out the candles together, and their mother couldn't help but say that she had raised Meng Yanchen since he was young and he was always well-behaved, never making her angry. Hearing their mother's words, Meng Yanchen felt a sense of discomfort. Growing up in a family with strong control, he had learned to be attentive to others' words and emotions, submitting to whatever came his way.

Knowing that her older brother had a special liking for butterflies, Xu Qin gave him a gift—a vividly colorful butterfly unique to the Panama tropical rainforest. Meng Yanchen saw the lifelike butterfly in the box and told his sister that to obtain the most vibrant colors for such specimens, they would start removing the internal organs from the butterfly while it was still alive, until the moment it had the strongest will to survive, forever preserving it.

Reflecting on the cruelty of specimen preparation, Xu Qin and Meng Yanchen unintentionally touched upon the topic of their own family. Song Yan wanted to persuade Xu Qin to stop getting involved with him, as their mother would never approve of them being together. However, Xu Qin firmly stated that she would convince their mother to support her decision. Meng Yanchen blurted out in excitement, "If Xu Qin and Song Yan can be together, why can't we?" Xu Qin immediately silenced him and honestly admitted that Meng Yanchen could only be her brother.

After being rejected by his sister, Meng Yanchen went to a bar to drink. This time, he encountered a male customer sexually harassing a waitress named Ye Zi. Leaf defended her colleague and ended up getting slapped by the customer. Feeling frustrated, Meng Yanchen couldn't stand such despicable behavior and smashed the bottle against the customer. Since he had money, he wasn't afraid of causing trouble. That night, Meng Yanchen called for a designated driver, and Ye Zi happened to be the one. Ye Zi drove him home, and Meng Yanchen suggested that she should quit working at the bar and offered to help her find a new job.
