Yan Biqing led his men to track down Yan Nanxing and Jiang Xinbai, finding a house with smoke still rising. Yan Nanxing hadn't eaten for days, but Jiang Xinbai persuaded her to have some porridge. Phantom Physician also encouraged her to eat and went to speak with Jiang Xinbai. Yao Qianshu told Yan Nanxing that he was also on Ya Island when they were besieged, and later became Jiang Xinbai's follower, treating him like a younger brother.

He reassured Yan Nanxing that they would find a way to help her recover. Phantom Physician had finally accepted Jiang Xinbai as her son-in-law and handed him a letter, which surprised him greatly. It turned out that Yan Nanxing's biological mother was Phantom Physician's senior apprentice sister, whom she raised alone before meeting Yan Zhizhong. They had Yan Nanxing together, but Yan Zhizhong sacrificed himself to report to the Emperor about the Zornia herb case.

Yan Nanxing had always been frail, and one day, Phantom Physician returned from gathering herbs to find the village burnt down, with Yan Nanxing's parents perishing in the fire, having shielded Yan Nanxing to save her life. At just twelve years old, Phantom Physician cared for Yan Nanxing from then on, who called her "mother," believing she was adopted.

Phantom Physician had never approved of Yan Nanxing being with Jiang Xinbai, intending to separate them due to Yan Nanxing's parents' deaths being linked to Jiang Xinbai's father. However, seeing Jiang Xinbai's genuine care for Yan Nanxing these days softened her heart. Phantom Physician hoped Jiang Xinbai would protect Yan Nanxing for life, as he owed her that much, and instructed him to burn the letter, never to tell Yan Nanxing.

Yan Nanxing prayed fervently, hoping to revert to her original form soon, wanting to be herself again. Phantom Physician suddenly coughed up blood, sending Yan Nanxing running back inside in tears. Yao Qianshu discreetly informed Jiang Xinbai of Yan Biqing's trail, prompting Jiang Xinbai to use Yao Qianshu as a decoy to lure them, capturing them all at once. Yan Biqing had prepared a fake Yao Qianshu to test Jiang Xinbai and discovered he was indeed prosopagnosic.

Jiang Xinbai rushed to Yao Qianshu's aid upon realizing his danger, but Yao Qianshu, fatally injured, died protecting Jiang Xinbai. With her last breath, Phantom Physician told Yan Nanxing that no matter what form she took, she would recognize her at a glance, kissing Yan Nanxing's cheek before passing away. Yao Qianshu, covered in blood, died beside Jiang Xinbai, leaving both Jiang Xinbai and Yan Nanxing bereaved and inconsolable. Jiang Xinbai and Yan Nanxing buried Yao Qianshu and Phantom Physician.

Jiang Xinbai chose to reveal the truth to Yan Nanxing: she wasn't an orphan; her father was Yan Zhizhong, who died investigating the Zornia herb case as they had previously discussed. Jiang Xinbai was devastated, feeling he owed Yan Nanxing too much. Jiang Xinbai showed Yan Nanxing the letter from Phantom Physician, proposing their separation; Yao Qianshu died because of him, unable to protect Yan Nanxing.

Jiang Xinbai intended to return to the capital for revenge, believing it was the only way to ensure Yan Nanxing's safety. From this day on, they were no longer husband and wife. Jiang Xinbai left alone, but Yan Nanxing harbored no resentment toward him, willing to trade her life for his safety. Jiang Xinbai's condition of losing his senses worsened, driving him to hasten resolving everything. Pei Linfu supplied spices to relieve his headaches on the Emperor's orders.

Pei Linfu secretly summoned Jiang Zhixi and her husband to his mansion, claiming the Emperor was furious and Jiang Xinbai's return, persuaded by Yan Qingyun, was the only solution. However, they disagreed, trusting Jiang Xinbai to have his reasons and plans. As they left Pei Linfu's mansion, Miss Bai returned to Pei Linfu, claiming Yan Nanxing was a shapeshifting monster involved in the Zornia herb case, influencing everyone at the Yuejiang Prince's Mansion.

Upon Yan Nanxing's return to the capital, she bravely admitted to profiting from Zornia herb with Bai Yuan, absolving others of involvement. Yan Nanxing was immediately imprisoned and met Tong Saier and Liu Ruoqian in jail. Prepared for the worst, Yan Nanxing repeatedly urged them to survive. Pei Linfu decided to unseal the Yuejiang Prince's Mansion, giving them a glimmer of hope. Someone released smoke in the cell, causing everyone to pass out except for Yan Nanxing.
