Back then, Shen Xingruo’s father insisted on divorcing her mother. Her mother could no longer hold on to a man who didn’t love her. After Shen Xingruo’s father left, her mother played a piano piece. Shen Xingruo hid in her room, crying, too scared to come out. The next morning, when she finally stepped out of her room, she found a suicide note left by her mother, who had hanged herself.
This is the reason Shen Xingruo has never forgiven her father. If it weren’t for him, her mother would still be alive. This is also why she has always feared marriage. She knows that even the most loving couple can drift apart because of life’s trivialities. The next day, Evan came to the hospital to visit Shen Xingruo. This time, Evan formally expressed his feelings for her.
He told her that he had liked her since the days of the "Race Against Time" show. He hadn’t expected her to accept Lu Xingyan’s marriage proposal and thought he had no chance. It wasn’t until they met abroad that he learned she and Lu Xingyan hadn’t gotten married.
They became roommates, and every time Evan saw Shen Xingruo’s happy face while talking to Lu Xingyan on the phone, he didn’t want to interfere in her life, so he silently gave her his blessings. After she and Lu Xingyan broke up, Evan saw how heartbroken and sad she was, and he began to resent Lu Xingyan. When they met again in China, Evan took the opportunity during the show’s filming to reveal his feelings for Shen Xingruo to Lu Xingyan.
Shen Xingruo got a bit angry, realizing that Lu Xingyan’s jealousy was actually because of Evan, not just his own overthinking. She had misunderstood Lu Xingyan. Evan wanted to take Shen Xingruo away with him, but she politely refused. She didn’t love Evan. If she could only be with one person for the rest of her life, the only person Shen Xingruo could think of was Lu Xingyan—no one else.
Evan hadn’t expected Shen Xingruo’s love for Lu Xingyan to run so deep. He had failed. Just as they finished talking, a nurse knocked on the door, delivering the meal that Lu Xingyan had prepared for Shen Xingruo. A happy smile spread across her face. After being discharged from the hospital, Shen Xingruo pulled Lu Xingyan along to the editing room to watch the special episode about the love story of Wang Shenzhi and his wife.
Both of them were deeply moved and felt the editing was incredibly touching. Later, Chen Fei, Shen Xingruo’s father’s current partner, contacted Lu Xingyan, informing him that Shen Xingruo’s father was critically ill. Lu Xingyan brought Shen Xingruo to the hospital just in time to overhear a conversation between the doctor and Chen Fei, confirming that her father was beyond saving. The reason Chen Fei had kept it a secret was because of the staged farewell ceremony.
Shen Xingruo’s father felt guilty for hurting her and was filled with regret. Now, however, Chen Fei could no longer keep it from Shen Xingruo, so she contacted Lu Xingyan. Shen Xingruo went to the hospital to see her father one last time, and the two of them finally cleared the air. The old grudges were laid to rest. After handling Shen Xingruo’s father’s final affairs, Chen Fei also prepared to leave.
She wore a diamond pendant made from her father’s ashes, according to their agreement, so that her father would always be with her. Since the farewell ceremony had already been held, they wouldn’t have another one. The reason for the earlier ceremony was that Shen Xingruo’s father wanted a chance to see his old friends and Shen Xingruo one last time.
With both her parents now gone, Shen Xingruo realized that all she had left in her future was the journey back home. The only person in her future now was Lu Xingyan. Lu Xingyan promised that he would always stay by her side. He admitted that he had made many mistakes before, but he was working on improving himself, being less impulsive, and learning to be more empathetic. After hearing Lu Xingyan’s words, Shen Xingruo realized that she was falling even more in love with him.
