> Guardians of the Dafeng Recap

Lin An, driven by friendship, personally delivered the blood letter to the former emperor’s court, which had a significant impact on the entire court. Initially, Princess Pingyang’s escape, which violated the imperial edict, could have easily been twisted into something she was blamed for. However, with Lin An’s support, she silenced those who wanted to speak on Zhang Feng’s behalf. In the end, the emperor ordered Zhang Feng’s execution by decapitation.

Lin An’s mother, the imperial concubine, was furious upon hearing that her daughter had presented the blood letter to the former emperor’s court. She immediately went to confront Lin An, scolding her for interfering in state affairs. She reprimanded Lin An for being naive and unworldly, blaming her for her father’s indulgence. Lin An had never been politically astute, and now, for the sake of a princess, she had openly exposed herself. The concubine angrily berated her.

However, Lin An did not heed her mother’s words; her mind was consumed with thoughts of Princess Pingyang. Recalling the tragic scene when they last met, Lin An couldn’t help but feel heartbroken. Out of nowhere, a butterfly fluttered around Lin An, lingering near her for a long time. Lin An’s eyes reddened as she stared at the butterfly, murmuring to herself, *Could it be that Princess Pingyang has finally found freedom? *Henghui, too, had been released from prison.

Upon hearing that Zhang Feng would be executed within five days, he felt that the people who had harmed Princess Pingyang had been punished, avenging the wrongs. He thought that his junior brother could now rest in peace. The position of Minister of War was now vacant, and the emperor called for officials to recommend capable candidates. Each official rushed to recommend their own trusted confidants, but Wei Yuan remained silent.

The emperor, puzzled, handed the matter over to the Ministry of Personnel. Eventually, Wei Yuan humbly requested the emperor to pardon Xu Qi’an’s death sentence, though the emperor still did not agree. After learning of Princess Pingyang’s wrongful death, Lin An remained in the palace, unable to eat or sleep, her eyes constantly red from crying.

The Eldest Princess, seeing Lin An’s sorrow, called for Xu Qi’an to visit, bringing with him a scroll and some carefully prepared pastries to give to Lin An. However, when Xu Qi’an arrived at Lin An’s courtyard, a maid turned him away, as Lin An refused to see anyone. After the maid left, Lin An unrolled the scroll Xu Qi’an had brought.

It was a painting of Princess Pingyang, drawn during her lifetime, depicting scenes of the two of them celebrating the Lantern Festival together. There was also a poem, written by Princess Pingyang herself. Upon seeing Pingyang’s handwriting, Lin An broke down into uncontrollable sobs. The crown prince, visiting to console Lin An, was also deeply saddened upon hearing her cries.

Recently, Xu Qi’an had not received his salary, and his aunt began causing trouble, demanding that both Xu Pingzhi and Xu Qi’an immediately hand over their monthly stipend. With no money in their pockets, Xu Qi’an and Xu Pingzhi were left with no choice but to give up meat and eat vegetables to save money. But just as they spoke, a palace eunuch arrived at the Xu family to announce an imperial decree.

The emperor’s reward had finally arrived, and Xu Pingzhi and his wife were stunned to see the emperor’s generous gift—five thousand taels of gold, sparkling in the sunlight. They had never seen such dazzling wealth before. With this reward, Xu Qi’an’s family status immediately rose. His aunt and Xu Pingzhi quickly surrounded him with warmth and concern, and Xu Qi’an, in turn, generously entrusted much of the gold to his aunt for safekeeping.

Xu Qi’an also brought some gold to share with his former comrades in the Night Watch, including Li Yuchun. Everyone was deeply moved upon receiving the gold, expressing their gratitude. Historically, people could endure hardship together but rarely shared in good fortune, yet Xu Qi’an, who benefited, remembered to share it with them. He was truly a rare and good person. The emperor’s delay in pardoning Xu Qi’an made him uneasy.

Wei Yuan suggested that the emperor simply did not like Xu Qi’an, perhaps due to the previous incident with Linglong. Xu Qi’an then asked whether capturing Zhou Chixiong would lead to a pardon for him, and Wei Yuan nodded, confirming that capturing Zhou Chixiong would indeed be a great achievement. Finally, the second member of the Tian Di Hui caught Zhou Chixiong. Riding on a phoenix, they delivered Zhou Chixiong to Xu Qi’an.

To deal with the benefactors who had aided Zhou Chixiong, Xu Qi’an gathered the great scholars from Bai Lu Academy and Chu Caiwei from the Directorate of Celestials to accompany him in presenting the matter to the emperor.
