Wang Simu carefully prepared gifts for Xu Xinnian’s parents. She gave his eldest sister an expensive set of cosmetics, but noticing her lack of enthusiasm, she quickly followed up with two of the most popular storybooks. Xu Xinnian’s eldest sister, who loved reading such books, was delighted and immediately got up to serve tea to Wang Simu. Seeing that everyone was happy, Wang Simu explained her purpose for coming.

She admitted that, because of her, Xu Xinnian might have suffered a blow to his pride. Xu Pingzhi quickly reassured her, saying that his son had always been obedient and sensible since childhood, and he would neither hold grudges nor cause his parents unnecessary worry. With that, he led Wang Simu to see Xu Xinnian. At that moment, Xu Xinnian was miserably preparing to hang himself, feeling utterly humiliated by the day’s events.

He believed he had lost all dignity and, worse, had offended Wang Zhenwen, a man who could decide his future in the imperial bureaucracy. Xu Pingzhi flung open the door, only to see Xu Xinnian attempting to hang himself while his nephew frantically clung to him to stop him. Afraid that Wang Simu might see this, Xu Pingzhi quickly shut the door. Xu Xinnian’s mother then approached, opened the door, and, seeing her son in distress, hurriedly closed it again.

She claimed that Xu Xinnian was engrossed in his studies and should not be disturbed. Wang Simu, however, didn’t believe their excuses. She finally opened the door herself and saw Xu Xinnian calmly reading while his elder cousin was grinding ink beside him. Xu Xinnian’s parents caught sight of Xu Qi’an giving them a knowing look and shaking a piece of rope in his hand, and they understood what was happening.

They quickly changed the subject and invited Wang Simu to go sightseeing elsewhere. Wang Simu, aware that Xu Xinnian was undoubtedly upset, felt relieved. She glanced at him with concern before leaving. Xu Qi’an was puzzled by the significance of the stone Wang Simu left behind. Xu Xinnian explained that it symbolized, “My heart is as steadfast as a stone and unbreakable. ” Realizing Wang Simu’s true feelings, Xu Xinnian’s despair dissipated, and he no longer felt hopeless.

Meanwhile, the emperor tasked Wang Zhenwen with overhauling the Ministry of Personnel. Wei Yuan also wanted to use Wang Zhenwen’s efforts to eliminate lingering enemies of the court. Wei Yuan preemptively investigated the Ministry’s personnel files and discreetly removed the records of those guilty of serious crimes. However, these files needed a mediator to reach Wang Zhenwen’s hands. Wei Yuan thought of Xu Qi’an and assigned him this task.

Wei Yuan’s plan was to use Xu Xinnian’s situation to help Xu Qi’an redeem himself and earn Wang Zhenwen’s favor. After some thought, Xu Qi’an devised an even better plan. He handed the confidential documents to Xu Xinnian, allowing him to present them to Wang Zhenwen. This way, Wang Zhenwen would also hold Xu Xinnian in higher regard. That night, Wang Zhenwen’s residence was brightly lit.

With the emperor demanding a thorough investigation into the Ministry of Personnel, failure to uncover leads could result in Wang Zhenwen’s dismissal. At this critical moment, Wang Simu handed the confidential documents to her father, helping him escape from a precarious situation. Although Wang Simu attributed the success to Xu Xinnian, Wang Zhenwen knew very well that Wei Yuan was the one assisting him behind the scenes. The emperor commended Wang Zhenwen and rejected his request to retire to the countryside.

After court, Wang Zhenwen personally visited Wei Yuan. Wei Yuan first took him to observe the market prices of grain and then casually chatted about everyday matters. Wang Zhenwen learned that Wei Yuan was preparing to personally lead troops to attack the Wu tribe. Wei Yuan expressed hope that Wang Zhenwen would protect the emperor and stabilize the court during his absence. At last, Wang Zhenwen understood Wei Yuan’s character.

It became clear to him that Wei Yuan’s ambitions were not tied to court politics or factional struggles but were rooted in a broader vision for the world. Wang Zhenwen realized that his earlier judgments of Wei Yuan had been mistaken.
