Guardians of the Dafeng Episode 40 (Ending) Recap
> Guardians of the Dafeng Recap
Many Jinluo officers and members of the Directorate of Celestial Studies arrived, along with Xu Qi’an’s friends from the Spring Breeze Hall. They stood protectively by Xu Qi’an’s side as he publicly exposed the crimes of Duke Cao and Que Yongxiu. Afterward, Xu Qi’an personally executed them, beheading the two wicked men for all to see.
Having eliminated the two villains, Xu Qi’an threw away his Nightwatchman’s token and apologized to Wei Yuan, declaring that he would no longer serve as an official. Wei Yuan sighed deeply and remarked, "To be a good official is to be unashamed before the heavens and worthy in the eyes of the people. Yet, once you enter the bureaucracy, how many can truly achieve this? "Suddenly, someone patted Xu Qi’an on the shoulder.
Turning around, he saw Zheng Xinghuai, appearing just as he had when they first met. Zheng expressed his gratitude on behalf of the people of Chuzhou. Xu Qi’an smiled, feeling a sense of relief—Zheng could finally rest in peace. The emperor soon arrived with soldiers, crossbows drawn, ready to kill Xu Qi’an. However, their attempt failed. A golden flash erupted as Xu Qi’an swung his blade, and in that moment, he and the light vanished.
With the intervention of a mysterious figure employing celestial techniques, the crowd seemed to forget Xu Qi’an’s existence entirely. Six months later, storytellers in the capital still recounted the Chuzhou case with great interest, attributing the emperor’s decision to reveal the truth to the heroic efforts of the Nightwatchman. Wei Yuan also convened a meeting with the ministers, urging them to speak with their conscience. During morning court, Emperor Jing accused Wei Yuan of disrespecting the throne, calling his actions insubordinate.
In response, Wei Yuan produced the Yasheng inscribed blade and compelled the emperor to issue a self-criticism edict. With all the ministers unanimously supporting the proposal, the emperor had no choice but to comply. As the Witch God Sect became increasingly audacious, Wei Yuan personally led the army to eradicate them. After several grueling battles, Wei Yuan sacrificed himself in the line of duty. With the nation left without his guidance, the court’s affairs fell to the Grand Secretary.
When the Grand Secretary struggled to manage everything, he received assistance from the much-praised Xu Xinnian. Now, Xu Xinnian, a beacon of justice, helped stabilize the kingdom and finally fulfilled his long-held ambitions. Meanwhile, Xu Qi’an returned to the Xu household and bought a skewer of candied hawthorn for his younger sister. Yet, when he arrived, his sister and the rest of his family no longer recognized him, as if they had never met him before.
Even Xu Pingzhi and his cousin failed to recall who he was. Although saddened, Xu Qi’an realized he now had all the time in the world. He wrote down the alchemy principles he had yet to explain and sent them to the Directorate of Celestial Studies. Passing by the Spring Breeze Hall, Xu Qi’an saw his former colleagues still upholding justice and punishing wrongdoers. He also noticed members of the Tian Di Society enjoying noodles together, laughing and chatting.
Chu Yuanzhen’s sword sheath bore an inscription of poetry that Xu Qi’an had once gifted him. Although everyone sensed that someone was missing, they could not remember who it was. Princess Lin An often returned to the lakeside pavilion, feeling a sense of loss as she waited for someone—though she could not remember whom. One day, a collection of poems was delivered to her residence.
The exquisite verses stirred her memories, and she vaguely recalled the poet who had once brought her so much joy. She remembered asking why the poems he gave her always lacked the final lines, to which he had replied that if he gave her the complete collection, he could not remain by her side for long. Realizing that person had returned, Lin An ran out of her room to search for him, but she was already too late.
Walking along a sunlit path, Xu Qi’an saw Minister Zheng and his family reunited, and all his friends returned to their simple, happy lives. Everything was as it once was, except for his absence. Xu Qi’an lay down beneath a large tree to rest. In a dreamlike state, he was taken to Yunzhou, where he met a mysterious figure. The figure, dressed in black and masked, was someone Xu Qi’an had seen many times in his memories.
The man revealed that the fate of Da Feng was tied to Xu Qi’an. He explained that the Supervisor sought to elevate the nation’s fortune, and Xu Qi’an was the ideal candidate for the task. Finally, Xu Qi’an realized the masked man was his father—Xu Pingfeng. His father spoke passionately, "True contentment lies in detachment. This nation’s destiny was always ours to bear.
