One year ago, before Ye Ping'an was about to leave the capital, Zhao Feng, who had been entrusted with a task, handed her an item. Now, that item had finally become useful. According to Ye Ping'an, she had helped a private salt dealer named Huang Yimin with a heart ailment, earning his trust and gaining access to the private salt trade.

Yuan Shaocheng didn't believe Ye Ping'an's words, but Wu Xianer was quite interested in the private salt dealer, Huang Yimin. Ye Ping'an set a commission fee of 800 taels, and Wu Xianer agreed immediately. On their way back, Yuan Shaocheng reminded Wu Xianer not to mess with a tiger by its skin, warning that Ye Ping'an was not someone she could easily contend with.

Wu Xianer, however, ignored the warning, telling Yuan Shaocheng to focus on being a proper son-in-law in front of her. Unexpectedly, before they could return to the capital, their carriage was stopped by Zhao Feng, the Assistant Minister of Justice. Zhao Feng had received an anonymous tip-off that the carriage was carrying private salt. After searching the carriage, they indeed found a bag of private salt.

Wu Xianer didn't say much and was immediately arrested, along with Yuan Shaocheng, under the pretense of being common citizens. Yuan Shaocheng tried to bribe the jail guards, but they refused. The guards then kneeled before Wu Xianer, immediately following her orders to summon General Xian from the Left Yulin Army to release them. General Xian helped Wu Xianer out, but she didn't let him help Yuan Shaocheng.

Wu Xianer used General Xian's affection for her to get him to find the private salt dealer, Huang Yimin. Back at her residence, Wu Xianer informed Wu Youjing that the culprit behind the salt trade was Ye Ping'an. Wu Youjing immediately decided to find a new salt route, but just as Wu Xianer was about to argue, Wu Youjing saw through her true intentions: she wanted to defeat Ye Ping'an.

The memorial presented by Li Yuntang to the Empress was only approved with five words, as a warning. Therefore, Wu Youjing decided to scale back his plans and told He Yi to seek another salt route. Despite this, Wu Xianer secretly went out of the city to meet with Ye Ping'an. She specifically had Huang Yimin’s nephew, San'er, released from prison to identify him and confirm that Huang Yimin was indeed the person.

Huang Yimin brought only 1,000 stones of salt this time. Wu Xianer, Ye Ping'an, and Huang Yimin arranged to meet in two days at Qiyun Mountain Gorge to exchange silver and salt. Yuan Shaocheng was a day late in getting out of prison. Upon hearing that Wu Xianer had just returned from the outskirts of the city, he guessed that she had gone to make a deal with Ye Ping'an.

He made a special trip to her residence and once again warned her that there was a trap. Wu Xianer was determined to go head-to-head with Ye Ping'an, not because she really wanted to do business in private salt, but to prove herself superior to Ye Ping'an. Meanwhile, Gu Erniang was confused about why Ye Ping'an would personally show up. Ye Ping'an explained that a person who has been playing chess alone for too long eventually craves an opponent.

If Wu Xianer discovered that her opponent was Ye Ping'an, even if it was just a deliberately baited trap, how would she know if Wu Xianer would fall for it? He Maoshan was an informant placed by King Kangping by Yuan Shaocheng's side. However, He Maoshan was a small and cowardly person, prone to indecisiveness, which was something Yuan Shaocheng could exploit. Yuan Shaocheng instructed his people to have Gu Wenyu keep an eye on Wu Xianer.

If they could find something on her, it would earn Yuan Shaocheng the favor of King Kangping and allow him to fulfill his promise to make Yuan Shaocheng the Right Assistant Minister. Two days later, at Qiyun Mountain Gorge, Ye Ping'an and Wu Xianer met as agreed for the transaction, but neither of them exchanged silver for salt. Zhao Feng arrived with news of the transaction and tried to stop it.

However, when he saw that Ye Ping'an was holding the silver that Wu Xianer had brought, and Wu Xianer had armor instead of salt, Wu Xianer claimed that Ye Ping'an was guilty of hiding armor, which was a serious crime. Zhao Feng, not wanting to only listen to one side, reluctantly agreed to take Ye Ping'an back for investigation. At that moment, another group of people appeared and threw smoke bombs to rescue Ye Ping'an.

Yuan Shaocheng, leading a group, arrived, thinking they had captured the private salt dealer Huang Yimin, but the man was wearing a mask and was not Huang Yimin. Wu Xianer was intent on killing Ye Ping'an and didn’t want Zhao Feng interfering. She found a loyal person to investigate further. Soon, notices about Ye Ping'an’s arrest were posted everywhere. Yuan Shaocheng interrogated the man posing as Huang Yimin and got a clue.

However, when he asked where Ye Ping'an was, the man suddenly collapsed, poisoned. He was rescued in time but was in no condition to continue the interrogation. He Maoshan listened to the private salt dealer’s words and, as Yuan Shaocheng expected, he was swayed. He began to threaten Yuan Shaocheng. Yuan Shaocheng took advantage of the situation and arranged for He Maoshan to take a token to find Huang Yimin.

If He Maoshan could solve King Kangping’s problem with the salt routes, he would have earned a great merit, and He Maoshan eagerly agreed.
