The Empress sought Mei Ge Lao’s opinion on whether to appoint her son or her nephew as the Crown Prince. Mei Ge Lao simply replied that if her son were chosen, the Emperor could be honored in the Imperial Ancestral Temple. However, if her nephew were chosen, there had never been a precedent where a nephew would honor his aunt and uncle in the temple. A month ago, Yuan Shaocheng knew from the bell that Ye Ping'an had returned.

He went to the eastern suburbs and indeed found Ye Ping'an standing before the graves of Cai Lian and Danxin. Ye Ping'an knew it would be difficult for Yuan Shaocheng to collect evidence of King Kangping’s crimes while staying by his side alone. Moreover, King Kangping would never allow someone from Mangou to become Chancellor. Yuan Shaocheng, of course, knew that King Kangping was merely using him, but at this point, he had no one else to rely on.

Ye Ping'an proposed that she and Yuan Shaocheng join forces. According to her plan, they would first throw out a fake Huang Yimin to make Wu Xianer believe she had no connection to the real Huang Yimin, leading King Kangping to decide to work with the smuggler Huang Yimin. This was her true goal.

As for Yuan Shaocheng, he would lead King Kangping to the Jiulong Pavilion in the black market to prevent Su Xuan Zhen Ren from revealing the royal family’s secrets, thus earning King Kangping’s trust. Additionally, Ye Ping'an needed Yuan Shaocheng to dig a secret passageway from Yanqing Alley’s haunted house to Mangou, which would explain how Ye Ping'an ended up in the underground tunnels of Mangou. By chance, Ye Ping'an met Huang Yimin, who helped her carry out the plan.

The Clerk of the City Office took Huang Qi to a salt shop, forcing the shopkeeper to accept smuggled salt and sell it as official salt. Huang Qi even had the shopkeeper sign a receipt. The Clerk of the City Office knew that this was not the usual practice and began to suspect something. Huang Qi argued back, and the Clerk of the City Office could not refute him.

The Empress raised the issue of the Crown Prince at Zhanlu Hall, and Minister Zhang, who supported King Kangping, immediately suggested that Wu Youjing should be made Crown Prince. Some agreed, while others opposed, and a dispute broke out. Mei Ge Lao stepped forward and proposed that the matter be postponed, and the Empress followed suit, delaying the decision.

Though Mei Ge Lao was old, he was still sharp and kept his distance from King Kangping, advising Yuan Shaocheng not just to be a loyal minister, but to be a capable one as well. King Kangping had successfully created a favorable situation, using salt to win over noble families. As for the common people, he believed that if he lowered salt prices at the right time, they wouldn’t be able to cause any trouble.

The Clerk of the City Office reported to Wu Youjing that Huang Qi insisted on having a receipt signed. Wu Youjing was unconcerned and instructed the Clerk to keep a close watch on Huang Qi. Yuan Shaocheng arranged for Gu Wenyu to be ready so that when Li Jun obtained evidence, they could act swiftly.

Li Jun’s men did not find Ye Ping'an but discovered a letter beneath a stone lion with evidence that King Kangping was buying smuggled salt and passing it off as official salt in the Jiulong Pavilion of the black market. Eager for a breakthrough, Li Jun, remembering how close Su Xuan Zhen Ren had come to revealing the royal family’s secrets, trusted the letter’s information and immediately led his men to search for evidence of King Kangping’s smuggling activities.

When the Clerk of the City Office awoke, he found that Huang Qi and the ledger were both missing. Panicked, he rushed to report the situation. King Kangping quickly learned that Li Jun had gone to search for evidence and that Huang Qi and the ledger were missing. He remained calm on the surface but secretly arranged for people to find Minister Zhang and have the ledger destroyed.

The plan was going perfectly until news arrived from the border that Shuo Dan was approaching the northern border and that Da Feng’s soldiers had retreated to the border town. Wu Youjing, responsible for military supplies at the border, knew that if the situation escalated into another Gold Yuan Battle, Ye Ping'an would have to cancel her plans. Until the border situation stabilized, neither Yuan Shaocheng nor Ye Ping'an would take further action, and they would not meet again.

The Empress praised Wu Youjing for his success in managing the border military supplies but also mentioned someone had submitted a memorial accusing him of selling smuggled salt as official salt. Wu Youjing naturally denied the allegations. Su Xuan Zhen Ren returned to King Kangping’s residence, and Wu Youjing was pleased to see her. However, Wei Xuanmin, in front of Wu Xianer, was distant and cold toward King Kangping.

Wu Youjing asked his wife to leave so that he could speak with Su Xuan Zhen Ren alone. Su Xuan Zhen Ren, however, remarked that everything she did was for Wu Xianer’s sake.
