The Empress Dowager arranged a meeting with Su Xianling and greatly admired her for successfully curing Dongfang Jing using the Venomous Orchid. The Empress Dowager expressed her strong favor towards Su Xianling and even declined the marriage proposal of Princess Nan Yaner. However, Su Xianling didn't share the Empress Dowager's assumption that she had a definite hold on Dongfang Jing. Instead, she believed that what was meant to be hers would naturally come to her, and if it wasn't meant to be, forcing it would be futile. This response left the Empress Dowager feeling like she had hit a cotton ball with her fist.
Worried that Dongfang Jing was still weak despite being cured of the poison, Su Xianling specially prepared a potent tonic for him and insisted he take it. Dongfang Jing detected an odd scent from the medicine and initially didn't want to drink it. However, Su Xianling forcefully made him drink, even covering his mouth with her hand. She went on to claim that the medicine contained not only toad skin but also disgusting things like chicken droppings. Dongfang Jing wanted to vomit but couldn't, so he reluctantly drank it down.
Nan Yaner burst into Dongfang Jing's room and saw Su Xianling and Dongfang Jing in what appeared to be an intimate situation. Assuming they were being affectionate early in the morning, she felt disgusted by their lack of seriousness and slammed the door shut before storming off, leaving Su Xianling bewildered. The news of the assassination of the envoy from Nanjiang reached Nan Yaner, making her both angry and anxious. Achu, her attendant, followed her out of concern for her safety, but Nan Yaner expressed disdain for her presence.
Dongfang Yi sent a secret remedy from Luoyi Mansion to Nan Yaner as a gesture of goodwill, but she rejected it. She also decided that the wedding date should not be postponed any longer.
Knowing that the Empress Dowager was still at the Buddhist temple so late at night, Su Xianling sneaked into her chambers. She accidentally discovered that the Empress Dowager was wearing a mask on her face, and in disbelief, she realized that the Empress Dowager was an imposter. This revelation surprised Su Xianling and attracted the Empress Dowager's attention.
