Synopsis

Zhuang Zhou was originally a student at the noble academy of the State of Chu. His father was framed by treacherous ministers, leading to the destruction of his family. Before the incident, Zhuang Zhou had fled from home to avoid an arranged marriage and went in search of his childhood friend, Shuiyue, who had been missing for years. While on the run, he was rescued by a boatman and his daughter, who, unbeknownst to him, was his childhood companion Shuiyue, now called Xiangyue. Zhuang Zhou later traveled to Baiyu City in Mount Funiu to study under a master but left due to differences in philosophy. He then took up a minor official post in Song's Meng territory.

Despite many trials, Zhuang Zhou and Shuiyue eventually became a couple. Living a humble life, Zhuang Zhou earned his livelihood by selling straw sandals, all while writing and pursuing philosophical insight, gaining fame among the feudal lords. King Wei of Chu invited him to become prime minister, but Zhuang Zhou declined, choosing instead a carefree and simple life. This decision allowed him to achieve the dream of soaring like the Kunpeng and living a life of freedom, culminating in the legendary transformation of Zhuang Zhou into a butterfly, where the boundaries between self and the world dissolved.
