In Youzhou, after Cui Xingzhou had his fill of food and drink, the Prince of Youzhou sent a stunning woman to his room late at night to entertain him. Cui Xingzhou remained unmoved, but he was concerned that outright rejection might offend the Prince. So, he asked the woman to spend the night copying calligraphy. The next day, the woman tearfully complained to the Prince of Youzhou.

When the Prince heard the poetry she had copied, he realized that Cui Xingzhou was not as simple-minded as he seemed. Madam Shi, the wife of Shi Yikuan, would often visit the Empress and give her unsolicited advice. Although Shi Xueji preferred crimson rhododendrons, Madam Shi ordered the servants to keep only the deep red ones because they were more appropriate for royalty.

She reminded Shi Xueji that the reason Lu Wen relied on their family’s military power was so that Shi Xueji would always consider the interests of the Shi family. Now that the emperor had promoted Sun Yuner to the rank of Virtuous Consort, Madam Shi warned Shi Xueji to be vigilant and not let that consort forget her place.

The Prince of Youzhou was pleased with this arrangement and began making preparations to present himself before the emperor. Liu Miantang returned to her maternal home, where her grandfather was still alive and in good health. He first punished his two irresponsible sons and whipped Liu Miantang’s uncle for allowing her to act recklessly.

Although he disciplined them, he still doted on Liu Miantang when he saw her. Her mother had died young, so her grandfather had always been somewhat indulgent with her. Liu Miantang temporarily stayed at her grandfather’s house, which was managed by her second aunt. This aunt was a harsh woman, and now that Liu Miantang had returned, she was worried about losing out on the family inheritance and became very cautious.

Her daughter, Qingying, was pampered and spoiled, showing no understanding of propriety. Not only did she lack respect for her elder sister, but she also warned her mother not to be deceived by the pocket money Liu Miantang gave them. Qingying had reached the age of marriage, so her grandfather instructed others to find a suitable match for her.

Meanwhile, Cui Xingzhou, who was far away in Youzhou, had no idea that Liu Miantang had a younger sister and mistakenly thought that Liu Miantang was seeking another marriage prospect, which left him brooding for quite some time. During the day, a suitor came to the house, but he was not interested in Qingying. Instead, when he caught a glimpse of Liu Miantang’s figure in the courtyard, he became infatuated and asked the matchmaker to inquire about Liu Miantang’s age.

The second aunt, not wanting to see Liu Miantang have a good match, deliberately spoke ill of her. At dinner, Liu Miantang’s grandfather asked the second aunt to help find a husband for Liu Miantang as well. The second aunt immediately claimed that they wouldn’t have enough for two dowries if they prepared both at the same time. Liu Miantang quickly reassured her, saying that she had no desire to marry.
