One day, while Liu Miantang was dressing up, the Dowager Consort came in to help her choose a suitable pearl hairpin. As they chatted, the Dowager Consort reminisced about how she had once helped her own daughter dress before her wedding. Later, when her niece came to live with her, she gave her many pieces of jewelry, but since her niece didn’t resemble her, the jewelry didn’t suit the Lian family girl, who had a more delicate appearance.

Lian Binglan and her mother then maliciously questioned whether it was a fake or if it had been stolen. Liu Miantang calmly explained that since the wedding ceremony hadn’t yet been completed, she didn’t want to flaunt such a valuable item and had therefore made a replica. Her quick wit allowed her to smoothly defuse the situation. That evening, the Dowager Consort closed the doors and gathered all the family members to inquire about the incident with the hairpin.

Liu Miantang admitted that she had long noticed the maid's covetous gaze toward the hairpin, so she had secretly replaced it beforehand, commissioning a craftsman to make a replica. With Lian Binglan and her mother’s scheme exposed, this time, the Dowager Consort did not plead for leniency on Lian Binglan’s behalf.
