A few days later, Liu Miantang was summoned by the Dowager Consort. When she arrived at the Dowager Consort's room, she saw Lian Binglan's mother hurriedly leaving, indicating that she had just spoken with the Dowager Consort. The Dowager Consort discussed with Liu Miantang the idea of making Lian Binglan a secondary wife.

Liu Miantang candidly explained that in the past, merchants who spent long periods away from home would sometimes marry two wives, one in the north and one in the south, to maintain households in both places. Since the two wives lived in different regions, they seldom had any conflicts. However, if Lian Binglan were to be made a secondary wife now, it would inevitably lead to disturbances and trouble in the future.

Liu Miantang remained courteous and calmly analyzed the pros and cons, but the Dowager Consort spoke as if issuing a command, saying that if Lian Binglan were not taken as a secondary wife, outsiders would mock them, claiming that even the mighty Prince of Huaiyang couldn’t accommodate a concubine. Worried that her son, who was away at war, would hear about the upheaval at home, the Dowager Consort ordered a lockdown on the information, forbidding anyone from leaking the news, especially about Liu Miantang’s departure. Shi Yikuan had been delaying the military orders, failing to send reinforcements to the frontlines. Cui Xingzhou’s troops in Zhenzhou were nearly out of supplies. Shi Xueji found a reason to summon her father to the palace, where she solemnly reminded him to dispatch troops immediately. She warned him that she and the Emperor were on the same side now, and they had to consider the bigger picture. If he didn’t act, she would feign poisoning from the cakes sent by her elder sister, and the Emperor would surely hold her sister accountable.

Furious, Shi Yikuan left the palace, even knocking over a potted plant as he stormed out. The Emperor visited the Empress’s residence, and upon seeing the broken flowerpot and the frightened palace maids, he understood what had happened. He quickly issued an edict praising the Shi family for raising virtuous daughters and commending the Empress for her wisdom and grace. The entire Shi family was awarded titles.

With these honors bestowed, Shi Yikuan had no choice but to send troops, and he did so promptly. Upon hearing that Shi Yikuan was sending reinforcements, the rebel Prince Sui arranged for assassins to capture Cui Xingzhou’s family to force the Prince of Huaiyang to retreat. Liu Miantang received word of this and rushed back to the Prince of Huaiyang’s residence overnight, escorting the Dowager Consort and the rest of the family to Qingquan Town just in time.

By the time Prince Sui’s men arrived, Liu Miantang had already safely evacuated the Dowager Consort. During their escape, the conditions were rough, and Lian Binglan and her mother couldn’t bear the hardship. They acted arrogantly towards Liu Miantang, even demanding that she personally cook noodles for them. They haughtily claimed that since they were from the Lian family and not part of the Prince of Huaiyang’s household, they shouldn’t have to endure a life on the run.

The Dowager Consort overheard this and immediately scolded them. Seeing their true colors exposed, Lian Binglan and her mother had no choice but to leave in disgrace. Fearing any unforeseen circumstances, Liu Miantang moved the Dowager Consort and others to a porcelain kiln she had previously purchased. Prince Sui’s men searched everywhere but couldn’t find them. Meanwhile, Cui Xingzhou personally led his soldiers in a night raid on the rebel prince’s mansion, capturing Prince Sui’s followers and crippling his forces.

Cui Xingzhou found Liu Miantang and his mother in Zhenzhou. With the rebel army defeated, Cui Xingzhou brought his wife and mother back to the Prince’s residence. Once again, Cui Xingzhou’s aunt began performing her tearful acts in public, begging Cui Xingzhou to take Lian Binglan as a secondary wife. Cui Xingzhou firmly refused.

His aunt resorted to threats of suicide, but the Dowager Consort, unable to tolerate it any longer, ordered everyone else out so she could speak privately with her sister.
