The night was as cool as water, with lanterns decorating both sides of the river. Shops lined the streets, and the atmosphere was lively, as families came out to enjoy the lanterns. Pei Yan accompanied Jiang Ci on a boat ride, lingering in the intoxicating night scene. Jiang Ci thanked Pei Yan for saving her multiple times, and Pei Yan, in turn, opened up to her, sharing a long-held wish from deep within his heart.

Jiang Ci wrote her own wish on a lotus lantern, along with Pei Yan’s grand ambition to expand the Pei family's legacy. Together, they watched the lantern drift down the river, their hearts filled with complex emotions. Seizing the moment, Jiang Ci bid farewell to Pei Yan, expressing her desire to fulfill her own wish. Pei Yan tried to persuade her to stay, but it was in vain.

On the bridge, a young woman recognized Pei Yan and excitedly called out to her companions. Soon, a group of women, who admired Pei Yan, gathered, loudly calling his name. Pei Yan ignored them, his gaze fixed solely on Jiang Ci. As the boat slowly drifted under the bridge, the women rushed to the other side, waiting eagerly for Pei Yan to reappear.

Pei Yan took out a dagger, placed it in Jiang Ci’s hand, and then plunged it into his own chest. Blood instantly soaked his clothes. When the boat emerged from under the bridge, the women saw that Pei Yan had been stabbed and screamed in terror. Due to the excessive blood loss, Pei Yan fainted on the spot, leaving Jiang Ci panicked and disoriented. Wei Zhao heard early on that Jiang Ci had stabbed Pei Yan.

Jiang Ci was locked in the prison, and Pei Yan was summoned to the palace by the Emperor Xie Che of Daliang. Pei Yan claimed he was deeply in love with Jiang Ci and that, in desperation, she had stabbed him when she refused his advances. Xie Che scolded Pei Yan harshly, but Pei Yan remained adamant that he would not give up on Jiang Ci, even demanding to have her by his side every day.

Xie Che disapproved, forcing Pei Yan to resign from his post and confine himself to the Jian Ding Marquis Residence for reflection. Wei Zhao visited Jiang Ci in prison, warning her not to be deceived by Pei Yan’s false front. He told her that Pei Yan was merely using her and urged her to continue acting as his spy. Jiang Ci resolutely refused, and Wei Zhao left, frustrated. Xie Che, unable to change Pei Yan’s mind, eventually released Jiang Ci.

Pei Yan came to the prison to take her back, and upon entering, saw Wei Zhao. As Wei Zhao watched the two of them leave, he was filled with resentment. Pei Yan took Jiang Ci out for a walk in the streets and even bought her some of her favorite snacks.

Once again, Jiang Ci tried to part ways with him, but Pei Yan, fearing the Silver-Faced Assassin might silence her, brought up Emperor Xie Che, stating that if Jiang Ci left now, it would be considered treason. Left with no choice, Jiang Ci returned to the Marquis Residence with Pei Yan. Rong Yudie, who harbored a deep hatred for Jiang Ci, punished Pei Yan by making him reflect in isolation for three days.

Cui Liang came to visit Jiang Ci, bringing her a few books to pass the time. Grateful for his care and concern, Jiang Ci found herself relying on Cui Liang’s kindness, as she felt like an outsider in the Marquis Residence. That night, Jiang Ci secretly sent for Wei Zhao, asking him to return her little clay cat. Wei Zhao flatly refused.

Rong Yudie had sentenced Pei Yan to kneel in the ancestral hall for three days, forbidding him food or drink. Both An Cheng and Tong Min were distressed by this, and An Cheng inadvertently revealed that Rong Yudie had once slapped Jiang Ci after Pei Yan was arrested. Eager to learn more, Pei Yan pressed for details, while Jiang Ci listened quietly from the side. During the cold winter, the ancestral hall was damp and freezing.

Rong Yudie forbade Pei Yan from bringing any blankets or warm clothing. Jiang Ci, feeling sorry for him, sneaked into the hall to check on Pei Yan, constantly trying to explain Rong Yudie’s actions, hoping Pei Yan wouldn’t hold a grudge against her. The Emperor of Daliang received a report from officials that weapons produced by the Nanning Armory were poorly made and easily broken.

Xie Che tasked Left Minister Dong Fang to assemble a skilled team of officials to investigate. Since Nanning was under the Pei family’s control, Pei Yan, upon hearing this, volunteered to Emperor Xie Che to investigate the military equipment case in secret. Xie Che readily agreed. Rong Yudie urged Pei Yan to handle the matter well and to return to court as soon as possible.

Pei Yan decided to bring Jiang Ci along on the trip, and Rong Yudie, despite her reservations, could not stop him. When Pei Yan explained the situation to Jiang Ci, she realized that Nanning was close to Yu Zhou, where she wanted to go, and immediately agreed to accompany him. Meanwhile, Wei Zhao was searching for Yan Shuangqiao, hoping to learn the truth behind King Qi’s assassination from her.

Upon hearing that Pei Yan was also looking for Yan Shuangqiao, Wei Zhao sent people to monitor the Marquis Residence’s movements. One night, Wei Zhao snuck into the residence and saw Jiang Ci packing her things. Cui Liang was also present, and he wanted to accompany Pei Yan to Nanning as well. After Cui Liang left, Wei Zhao entered the room to meet Jiang Ci.

He had originally intended to return her little clay cat but hesitated at the last moment. Jiang Ci noticed the Dark Night Orchid stain on his hand and gave him a box of ointment to remove the mark. On the spot, Wei Zhao decided to go to Nanning too.

The next morning, Wei Zhao reported to Xie Che, informing him that Pei Yan had borrowed men to rescue Teng Rui and secretly arranged for Xu Jun to mobilize the Changfeng Guards. Suspicious of Pei Yan, Xie Che sent Wei Zhao and the Guangming Guards to Nanning to assist Pei Yan in investigating the military equipment case, which Wei Zhao eagerly accepted.

Jiang Ci accidentally learned that Wei Zhao was also heading to Nanning, and her heart was secretly filled with joy, hoping to find a chance to get back her little clay cat.
