To overthrow Xie Che and make Pei Yan the emperor, Rong Yudie meticulously planned for many years, hiding gold, silver, and a large amount of military equipment in Nanling. However, Pei Yan had no interest in the throne. Rong Yudie refused to give up and was determined to eliminate Xie Che. Back in the day, she and Xie Che were deeply in love, but Xie Che abandoned her for the throne, leading her to marry Pei Zijing.

Because of this, Rong Yudie resented Xie Che for her entire life. Rong Yudie persuaded Wei Zhao to cooperate with Yan Shuangqiao, even at the cost of Yan Shuangqiao's life. However, her plan ultimately failed. Pei Yan pleaded with Xie Che, and Xie Che spared Rong Yudie from the death penalty, instead sentencing her to copy scriptures at a nunnery. Pei Yan sent Rong Yudie away from the Marquis of Jianding's mansion.

Before leaving, Rong Yudie reminded him to be wary of Xie Che. As Pei Yan watched the carriage carrying Rong Yudie slowly disappear, his heart was filled with mixed emotions. The servants of the Marquis's mansion took down all the lanterns prepared for the wedding, and the maids put away the bright red wedding dress that Jiang Ci was supposed to wear. Pei Yan witnessed this scene, feeling an indescribable pain in his heart.

He had originally intended to happily marry Jiang Ci, but because of Rong Yudie’s rebellion and her poisoning of Jiang Ci’s master, Yan Shuangqiao, the wedding fell apart. An Cheng and Tong Min both advised Pei Yan to visit Jiang Ci in the palace. However, Pei Yan felt too ashamed to face her and knew that Jiang Ci would never forgive him. He regretted bringing Jiang Ci back to Qingkang, which led to her losing her only remaining family.

Pei Yan personally took down the red wedding symbols from the doors and windows. Seeing that Pei Yan had fallen from favor, many of his retainers left the Marquis’s mansion. However, Pei Yan was willing to recommend Cui Liang to seek a higher position elsewhere, but Cui Liang chose to stand by Pei Yan. An Cheng and Tong Min also vowed their loyalty to Pei Yan, bringing tears to his eyes.

Ever since the death of her master Yan Shuangqiao, Jiang Ci had been deeply depressed, going five days without eating or drinking. The palace maids feared for her health and begged Wei Zhao to try and persuade Jiang Ci. When Wei Zhao visited Jiang Ci, she was eager to know why Yan Shuangqiao had been in the side hall. Wei Zhao had no choice but to reveal Rong Yudie’s plan to team up with Yan Shuangqiao to overthrow Xie Che.

Jiang Ci believed that Wei Zhao had forced Yan Shuangqiao to her death to avenge his father, Xiao Haitian. She swore that she never wanted to see Wei Zhao again and forcibly drove him away. Before leaving, Wei Zhao handed over a memento left by Yan Shuangqiao for Jiang Ci — a garment that Yan Shuangqiao had personally sewn for her. Wei Zhao urged Jiang Ci to pull herself together.

Wei Zhao confessed to Xie Che, taking responsibility for allowing Rong Yudie to plant her people within the imperial guards. However, Xie Che, recognizing that Wei Zhao had helped report the assassin’s whereabouts in time, chose not to pursue the matter further. Wei Zhao wanted to root out all of Rong Yudie’s agents within the court, but Xie Che, knowing that Pei Yan alone couldn’t stir up any significant trouble, decided to drop the investigation.

Xie Che, naturally suspicious, felt something was off with Wei Zhao since his return from Liangzhou, and ordered the imperial eunuch Tao Zizhu to send someone to investigate Wei Zhao’s activities there. Tao Zizhu sent Jiang Yuan to Liangzhou. Due to excessive grief, Jiang Ci fell gravely ill. Cui Liang came to treat her, and only after seeing her regain consciousness did Wei Zhao feel at ease and leave.

Cui Liang kindly persuaded Jiang Ci to take her medicine, and only then did she comply. Dong Juan also happened to visit Jiang Ci, and after leaving the palace together with Cui Liang, the two found themselves getting along well and developed a mutual liking for each other. Since Rong Yudie’s failed rebellion, rumors had spread among the people, claiming that Xie Che had caused the death of King Qi, Xie Chun.

When Zhuang Wang, Xie Yu, overheard these rumors, he immediately reported them to the Crown Prince, Xie Chi, suggesting that he question Xie Che about the truth behind Xie Chun’s death. Xie Chi had great faith in Xie Che, but unable to resist Xie Yu’s persistent urging, he went to ask Xie Che about Xie Chun’s death.

Xie Che firmly denied the accusation, making it clear that he hadn’t caused Xie Chun’s death and even asked Xie Chi to persuade Jiang Ci to let go of her anger. Xie Chi immediately decided to host a family banquet to bring the family closer. After much deliberation, Xie Che decided that the only way to completely dispel the rumors was to eliminate Jiang Ci. He personally visited Jiang Ci, bringing her many exquisite pastries.

Jiang Yuan searched Jiang Ci’s room and found the spirit tablet of Yan Shuangqiao, which enraged Xie Che. He burned the tablet on the spot. Jiang Ci desperately tried to grab it back but was restrained by Tao Zizhu. She tearfully pleaded with Xie Che to spare the spirit tablet, insisting that Yan Shuangqiao was not an assassin. Ignoring her pleas, Xie Che stormed out.

Xie Yu had long coveted the position of Crown Prince and deliberately encouraged Xie Chi to provoke Xie Che’s old wounds, hoping to infuriate him. However, to his surprise, Xie Che didn’t punish Xie Chi, leaving Xie Yu feeling resentful. Wei Zhao, upon hearing of this, saw an opportunity to cause more trouble for Xie Che. Xie Chi hosted the family banquet and asked everyone to prepare a dish.

Xie Che tasted the dishes prepared by both Xie Chi and Xie Yu. Jiang Ci made a ginkgo lotus soup, which Xie Che praised highly. Despite the praise, Jiang Ci remained melancholy. Xie Che poured himself another bowl and drank it all at once, but suddenly collapsed at the table. Jiang Ci was accused of poisoning him and was taken to the Dali Temple prison.

Upon hearing the news, Wei Zhao immediately ordered Yi Fei to prepare and set out to question Jiang Ci. The head of Dali Temple, Yu Jiming, interrogated Jiang Ci overnight, but she firmly denied poisoning Xie Che. Wei Zhao soon arrived, insisting on personally questioning Jiang Ci, asking her to recall every detail of the family banquet, which he then meticulously recorded.
