Lu Yan began frequently dreaming of Wang Qianqian dragging her into the depths of the lake, blaming her for not saving her in time. This brought back memories of college, when Deng Man had appeared deeply troubled. Upon asking, Lu Yan learned that Deng Man also liked Jiang Chengyi. Lu Yan explained that feelings were beyond her control and that she would never share her boyfriend with Deng Man.
Deng Man begged Lu Yan to give her a chance and briefly break up with Jiang Chengyi, but Lu Yan refused. Shortly after, Deng Man took her own life. Qin Yue and Liu Hao investigated all the cars passing through the alley that day but found nothing suspicious. Jiang Chengyi reviewed the footage and noticed a cleaner pushing a garbage bin through the area.
Given Wang Qianqian's size, it was plausible that her body could have been placed in the bin. Jiang Chengyi decided to track down the cleaner who appeared in the surveillance footage that night. Tang Jie, unable to reach Lu Yan, called Jiang Chengyi. He briefly explained Wang Qianqian’s murder, and Tang Jie, worried that Lu Yan couldn’t handle the situation, packed her belongings and went to Lu Yan’s house to stay with her.
Jiang Chengyi located the cleaner, who revealed that a garbage bin had indeed gone missing that night. Since it wasn’t valuable, they hadn’t reported it. This confirmed that the person who stole the bin was likely the suspect. However, the killer hadn’t disposed of the body in any lakes within a five-kilometer radius but instead drove 20 kilometers to dump it in the artificial lake, a perplexing detail.
The next day, Tang Jie called Jiang Chengyi, telling him that Lu Yan was blaming herself for both Deng Man’s and Wang Qianqian’s deaths. This gave Jiang Chengyi an idea. He instructed Liu Hao to reinvestigate Deng Man’s death site, which turned out to be the West Suburb Pond, now known as the Xiangsong Artificial Lake. This suggested that the killer had a specific attachment to the location.
Given that both victims were closely connected to Lu Yan, it became clear that the killer was targeting her. The following morning, Lu Yan woke up feeling rejuvenated, thanks to Tang Jie’s attentive care. She felt as though she had experienced a spiritual rebirth and believed things would get better. Sitting alone on the balcony, she enjoyed the scenery. When Tang Jie woke up and saw Lu Yan’s improved state, she was overjoyed.
The two chatted on the balcony, and Lu Yan told Tang Jie to pack her things and return home since she no longer needed company. While they were talking, they kept hearing noises from the next-door apartment. Curious if someone had moved in, Lu Yan opened the door and saw Zhong Wenxuan standing there with two large bags of breakfast. He explained that he had been drinking the previous night and had mistakenly hit the wrong door, causing the commotion.
Lu Yan then asked Zhong Wenxuan to escort Tang Jie home. Head Nurse Qiao found Lu Yan at the seaside park, where she was relaxing. Qiao Rui shared that before Wang Qianqian officially joined the anesthesiology department, the operating room had also wanted her on their team. However, Wang Qianqian had always regarded Lu Yan as her role model and insisted on staying in anesthesiology.
Qiao Rui reminded Lu Yan that if Wang Qianqian were alive, she wouldn’t want to see her so defeated. Finally regaining her resolve, Lu Yan returned home and discovered a heartfelt note left at her door, along with a gift of several goldfish. Grateful, she brought the fish inside.
What she didn’t know was that Jiang Chengyi had arranged for Zhong Wenxuan and Da Zhong to prepare a room for him in the apartment next to hers, intending to become her neighbor. Unaware of her new neighbor’s identity, Lu Yan left a note of her own as a greeting.
