Jiang Chengyi's father noticed that his son hadn’t been home for several days. Jiang Chengyi's mother explained that their son had rented an apartment next to Lu Yan's. While Jiang Chengyi's father outwardly complained about his son being unreliable with house chores, he secretly felt delighted. Lu Yan went online and discovered that Wang Qianqian's incident location was the same as where Deng Man’s tragedy occurred ten years ago, finding it highly suspicious.
The next morning, she reported this to the criminal investigation team, only to learn that they had already identified this connection. Qin Yue asked if Deng Man had any other family, but Lu Yan replied that she had almost none. Jiang Chengyi sensed a possible link between Deng Man’s case and Wang Qianqian’s case, so he sought out Officer Yang, who had been in charge of the Deng Man case and was now retired.
Officer Yang explained that Deng Man had left a suicide note, which was confirmed to be in her handwriting after analysis. There was evidence of strong emotional distress before her death, and without additional clues, the case had been closed as a suicide. However, five years later, an anonymous letter claimed Deng Man hadn’t died from drowning and requested the case be reopened. Attempts to contact the sender failed, as the address provided was fake.
To gather more information about Deng Man’s incident, Jiang Chengyi visited Tang Jie’s home. Although Tang Jie had been on good terms with Deng Man, she hadn’t noticed her being involved with anyone romantically and had never seen the suicide note. However, Zhong Wenxuan eagerly provided some information. He shared that a classmate from a neighboring class, Wu Qiang, had once had a crush on Deng Man and had asked Zhong Wenxuan to help get her contact information.
Zhong Wenxuan found Deng Man in the library, seemingly waiting for someone. Mistaking him for the person she was expecting, she looked disappointed when she realized otherwise. After hearing his purpose, Deng Man expressed that she had no interest in dating at the time. Wu Qiang later went abroad as an exchange student for two years, returned as a director, and now had a girlfriend, likely having forgotten about Deng Man.
However, Zhong Wenxuan had also noticed that Deng Man seemed to have feelings for Jiang Chengyi, as she often watched him play basketball. Jiang Chengyi planned to investigate Deng Man’s borrowing records at Ninghai University and had Director Wu notify the school in advance. Lu Yan also went to Ninghai University to apply for access. The librarian initially refused to disclose the records due to privacy regulations.
Just then, Jiang Chengyi arrived and took Lu Yan with him to review the records. They discovered that Deng Man had borrowed the same book multiple times within a year. Yet, as her roommate, Lu Yan had never heard her mention it. Leaving the library, Jiang Chengyi speculated that the repeatedly borrowed book must have had some special significance to Deng Man and encouraged Lu Yan to free herself from guilt.
At the same time, Wen Peng, who had returned to the university for a lecture, spotted the two chatting together. Jiang Chengyi received a call about a new lead and returned to the investigation team. Qin Yue questioned a seller of ether, who had a vivid memory of the buyer. While most of their customers were men, the seller had found it peculiar when a woman had purchased from them.
Qin Yue showed the seller a photo resembling Deng Man, and the seller confirmed it was her. Lu Yan wandered around the university and saw Coach Zhou teaching a sports class. Recalling that Deng Man had once taken volleyball as an elective with Coach Zhou, Lu Yan thought he might remember something and approached him. Coach Zhou, in a rush to get home to care for his wife, invited Lu Yan to follow him to his house.
At his home, Coach Zhou explained that his wife had been in a car accident while buying medicine for him, leaving her bedridden ever since. After feeding medicine to his wife in the bedroom, he shared his memories of Deng Man. He recalled accidentally seeing Deng Man chatting with Jiang Chengyi but didn’t catch their conversation. After Jiang Chengyi left, Deng Man seemed very upset.
When Lu Yan left, Coach Zhou sent a message to a contact, saying he had shared everything as instructed with Lu Yan. As Lu Yan walked to the playground, she ran into Wen Peng. He offered to take her out for a meal, but seeing that she wasn’t in the mood, he instead offered to escort her home.
At the entrance of her apartment complex, Wen Peng shared that he had learned about Lu Yan’s recent situation from Director Han and Tang Jie. He encouraged her to stop blaming herself and to let go of the past so she could embrace a new chapter in life.
