Yu Zheng explained that the book tells a story of an unconventional love affair. She suggested that Deng Man's repeated borrowing could indicate a similar experience, perhaps falling in love with someone she shouldn’t have. Lu Yan carefully recalled people connected to Deng Man who might have written the anonymous letter.
She consulted Director Gao at the school for details about the letter and then browsed through Deng Man’s Weibo account. There, she discovered what seemed to be a secondary account linked to Deng Man, where posts described her frustrations with being bullied—washing volleyball shoes for others, being unable to attend volleyball classes, and more. Lu Yan suddenly remembered a time when she returned to the dormitory to find Deng Man washing basketball uniforms for Ding Jing.
When she asked if Deng Man was being bullied, Deng Man denied it. Later, when picking up a delivery, Lu Yan overheard some classmates gossiping about Ding Jing abruptly transferring abroad. Ding Jing woke up at noon at home, complaining to her mother for nagging her to get up. She asked her mother to give her some dignity during the upcoming dinner with Jiang Chengyi’s parents.
While unboxing a package, she found a hairpin that Deng Man used to wear and was so frightened that she immediately threw it aside. That morning, Ding Jing went shopping at the mall. " Nervous and unsettled, Ding Jing began recalling incidents from her university days. She later sought out Liu Yujie, explaining that she was being threatened and asking Liu Yujie to contact Wang Qiang to arrange some self-defense tools. Though Liu Yujie wanted to refuse, she remembered that her family relied on Ding Jing financially and reluctantly agreed. During their conversation, Lu Yan, seated nearby, overheard everything.
When Ding Jing went to the restroom, Lu Yan secretly followed her and placed Deng Man’s hairpin on the sink in advance. Ding Jing, seeing the hairpin, thought Liu Yujie was playing tricks on her. Furious, she stormed into the restaurant and lashed out at Liu Yujie. She demanded to check the restaurant’s surveillance footage, but when her request was denied, she left in a huff.
Back in her car, Ding Jing made a phone call, threatening to expose everything from the past if someone continued stalking her. She also demanded an investigation to identify who was harassing her. Meanwhile, Lu Yan returned home, changed out of the black clothes she had worn to follow Ding Jing, and casually placed Deng Man’s hairpin on her vanity.
Determined to uncover the truth behind the deaths of Deng Man and Wang Qianqian, she browsed Ding Jing’s Weibo account again. Jiang Chengyi, back in his apartment next to Lu Yan’s, saw her hanging laundry on the balcony but didn’t notice anything unusual. The next day, Lu Yan resumed work at the hospital. Her first surgery went smoothly, and she seemed to have returned to her former self. After work, she encountered Wen Peng at the hospital entrance.
Wen Peng mentioned that he had just invested in a medical drama featuring a female anesthesiologist as the protagonist and asked Lu Yan for help refining the plot. Lu Yan agreed but declined his offer to drive her home. Ding Jing hosted a dinner for several business partners, gifting each one collectible porcelain from her company. However, when they opened the boxes, they found notes inside demanding that they confess to harming Deng Man.
Enraged, Ding Jing stormed out of the private room, only to find another note waiting for her. After Ding Jing and Liu Yujie left the restaurant, Lu Yan quietly left and headed home. Returning to her apartment complex, Lu Yan entered the elevator dressed in black. Jiang Chengyi, who saw her, found it odd but said nothing. Despite living next door, he continued to keep a low profile, avoiding any obvious interactions.
The next day, Jiang Chengyi secretly followed Lu Yan when she left home. At the gate of the complex, Wen Peng was waiting for Lu Yan with breakfast. Wen Peng invited her to serve as a consultant for his company’s scriptwriters after her shift. Lu Yan arrived on time at Wen Peng’s company and was revising the script when Jiang Chengyi sent her a message asking to meet. She didn’t reply or answer his calls.
On her way home, she pulled out her phone, trying to draft a response to Jiang Chengyi but couldn’t find the right words. Each time she wrote a message, she deleted it again and again.
