After Jiang Chengyi carried Lu Yan back onto the platform, she told him that it was Ding Jing who had pushed her. Jiang Chengyi first asked if she had any other injuries. Upon learning it was just a twisted ankle, he picked her up and took her out of the subway station. Ding Jing, in a disheveled state, ran out of the station but was stopped by a woman in black.
Meanwhile, Jiang Chengyi brought Lu Yan home, thoughtfully prepared a warm compress for her to reduce the swelling, and admitted that the incident earlier that day had left him shaken. He expressed concern that Ding Jing, being narrow-minded, might act out again. Jiang Chengyi suggested he sleep outside her door to protect her, but Lu Yan directly pointed out that he could just stay in the rental unit next door.
It turned out that Zhong Wenxuan had accidentally let it slip while eating hot pot, and Lu Yan had confirmed it through surveillance footage—she already knew Jiang Chengyi was secretly living next door. Grateful for him saving her life, Lu Yan sincerely thanked Jiang Chengyi. Ding Jing was too afraid to return home. Qin Yue went to Ding Jing’s house with an arrest warrant.
Upon hearing of Ding Jing’s actions, her mother was so distraught that she clutched her chest in pain. That night, Jiang Chengyi, to protect Lu Yan, made a bed on the floor of her room. Lu Yan thanked him once again, and Jiang Chengyi mentioned that he had long promised to always protect her.
This reminded him of their university days when Lu Yan once said she felt like she was being followed, and he had taught her some self-defense techniques. They had a carefree moment back then, laughing as they hugged each other. The next morning, Jiang Chengyi woke up early to make breakfast for Lu Yan. During breakfast, Lu Yan noticed a large scrape on Jiang Chengyi’s arm, likely from saving her the previous day.
She peeled a boiled egg to help him apply heat to the wound. After breakfast, Jiang Chengyi took Lu Yan to work and told her that, for the foreseeable future, he would pick her up and drop her off every day. At the police station, Jiang Chengyi reviewed surveillance footage of Ding Jing near the subway station.
He found that she had entered an alley and stayed there for about ten minutes before leaving through another exit and taking a rideshare to Jifu Village. There, she made two unanswered calls to Liu Yujie and later had several conversations with Yu Baifeng. Jiang Chengyi immediately called Yu Zheng, asking her to agree to professionally mentor Yu Baifeng.
To help Jiang Chengyi, Yu Zheng instructed Yu Baifeng to meet her at her teaching building within twenty minutes, warning that if he was late, he would lose the opportunity. Excited by the chance, Yu Baifeng rushed out of the recording studio and, unable to wait for a rideshare due to morning traffic, grabbed a shared bicycle and pedaled toward Ninghai University. When Yu Zheng saw a breathless Yu Baifeng arrive on a bike, she was slightly astonished.
Noticing that he had no sense of celebrity airs, she took him to her office to fill out a résumé. She then briefly asked why he was so eager to learn criminal psychology from her. Yu Baifeng explained that he wanted to challenge himself by portraying a serial killer, hone his acting skills, and that, after unilaterally canceling his contract with Boya Porcelain, he needed to secure a new role to explain himself to his company.
Yu Zheng tasked him with watching some course materials and writing a 5,000-word reflection. Yu Baifeng took the assignment seriously, staying up all night in the office to complete the essay. Impressed by his dedication, Yu Zheng agreed to let him attend her classes. Jiang Chengyi picked up Lu Yan after work and personally cooked her dinner. He even learned the recipe for her favorite spicy hotpot from a local vendor.
After dinner, Lu Yan told him to rest early and go home, but Jiang Chengyi claimed he didn’t have a washing machine and needed to borrow hers. He returned to his rental unit to fetch a pile of clothes, some of which still had tags on them, and insisted on washing them all to spend more time with Lu Yan. While the laundry was running, he helped her with her thesis.
When he asked for the Wi-Fi password, Lu Yan gave him the date of their official relationship. Jiang Chengyi was delighted, but Lu Yan quickly explained that she had a poor memory and used the same password for everything. Qin Yue continued investigating around Jifu Village and discovered that Ding Jing had visited a hotel, paid for a room, but didn’t check in. At the hospital, a patient named Lin Xiaoman was too scared to undergo surgery.
Lu Yan went to the ward to counsel the patient, and Wen Peng, who had come to see Lu Yan, followed her in. Lu Yan coaxed Lin Xiaoman out of the bathroom, but suddenly, Lin Xiaoman’s father began beating the child. When his wife tried to intervene, he roughly shoved her aside. Unable to tolerate it any longer, Wen Peng stepped in and forcefully reprimanded the father, questioning why he would also hit his wife. Lu Yan was stunned by Wen Peng's loss of composure.
