He Yan looked through every message she had sent to Wen Peng, feeling deeply guilty. Wen Peng had been in Ninghai all along but refused to reply to even one message. The more she thought about it, the sadder she became. Jiang Chengyi’s father comforted her, explaining that he had once gone back to look for Wen Peng, but Wen Peng’s father had moved with him to a new place, making it impossible to stay in touch.
He suggested waiting for the right time to explain everything to Wen Peng together. He Yan found the address of Wen Peng’s company and waited outside the building, hoping to see him. Wen Peng saw his mother from the office window and instructed his assistant to send her away. Yu Zheng and Liu Hao arrived in Chengzhou and first met with Li Ruonan’s martial arts coach. The coach praised Li Ruonan’s talent, saying she was his most accomplished student.
However, Li Ruonan had dropped out of school to care for her mother, who suffered from uremia. Yu Zheng speculated that Wen Peng had noticed Li Ruonan’s skills and paid for her dialysis in exchange for her loyalty. He Yan found Lu Yan at the hospital and asked her to pretend to invite Wen Peng out for a meal so she could meet her son. Lu Yan called Wen Peng, who readily agreed. Lu Yan then informed Jiang Chengyi.
When Wen Peng arrived at the restaurant and saw Lu Yan, he was delighted. However, when He Yan appeared, his face immediately darkened. Jiang Chengyi also showed up, and Wen Peng prepared to leave, but Lu Yan pleaded with him to stay and talk. Wen Peng sat with He Yan at one table, while Jiang Chengyi and Lu Yan sat a little farther away. He Yan recounted how, after her divorce, she had tried to find Wen Peng.
However, Wen Peng’s father had threatened to beat him to death if she came looking again. He Yan had even reported the threats to the police but, fearing for Wen Peng’s safety, chose not to return. Later, she heard Wen Peng had gone abroad after graduation and continued sending messages, assuming the lack of response was due to the time difference. Wen Peng said that he had once visited his mother’s new family and saw her caring for another son.
The way she spoke to him with concern made Wen Peng realize he was the “extra one. ” He added that he chose to study medicine in university because his mother had often been injured by domestic violence when he was a child. After saying this, Wen Peng walked out without looking back. Jiang Chengyi chased after him and urged him to treat his biological mother better. Wen Peng, however, accused Jiang Chengyi of setting him up to feel humiliated.
Jiang Chengyi explained that he had only rushed to the restaurant out of concern for his mother’s health. Wen Peng sarcastically asked if Jiang Chengyi considered him a threat. Before Jiang Chengyi could respond, Lu Yan informed him that He Yan had fainted. Jiang Chengyi quickly rushed her to the hospital. After much commotion, the hospital diagnosed He Yan with a sudden spike in blood pressure that caused her to faint.
Once she regained consciousness, Jiang Chengyi went out to buy water, and Lu Yan followed him out of the room. Lu Yan asked how Jiang Chengyi would handle things if Wen Peng were behind everything. Jiang Chengyi said he wouldn’t waver on his principles. Lu Yan expressed concern about how his mother would cope, and Jiang Chengyi could only ask for understanding. The task force analyzed the connections between Wen Peng and the various incidents.
Jiang Chengyi believed that Wen Peng was meticulous, extreme in personality, and skilled at manipulating people. He was certain Wen Peng was orchestrating events behind the scenes, but it was unlikely he acted alone. Jiang Chengyi instructed Qin Yue to investigate Wen Peng’s frequent contacts among colleagues or friends. On the day Yu Baifeng was released from prison, the prison guard handed him the letter left by Yu Zheng.
Holding a grudge against Yu Zheng, Yu Baifeng threw the letter into the trash. Wen Peng was waiting for him at the prison gates. On the way home, Yu Baifeng vowed to make Jiang Chengyi and Yu Zheng pay, and Wen Peng subtly encouraged his hatred while advising against directly confronting the police. Wen Peng’s assistant called to inform him that police officers had come to the filming set to investigate.
Wen Peng rushed to the site and arranged for the crew to wrap up early, deliberately opposing the police. Despite this, Qin Yue remained friendly, stating they might return the next day. Wen Peng later visited Yu Baifeng’s home and blamed the police visit on Yu Baifeng, further deepening his hatred toward Jiang Chengyi. Lu Yan’s mother’s medical report came back, and Director Han informed her that a polyp in her stomach had doubled in size compared to last year.
He recommended immediate surgery. Lu Yan called her mother and insisted she return to Ninghai for hospitalization. Yu Zheng discovered that Yan Mei had been hospitalized in Chengzhou and went to inquire the next day. The attending doctor said Yan Mei always visited the hospital alone and once mentioned that her daughter worked in another city. Yan Mei’s condition had progressed rapidly, and she had left the hospital when she needed a kidney transplant.
Yu Zheng and Liu Hao found out that Yan Mei had been cared for by the same nurse, Ma Cheng, during her hospitalization. After Yan Mei was discharged, Ma Cheng also resigned from the hospital. When Wen Peng returned to his villa, he found his father at the door. It was the first time his father had seen where he lived and declared his intention to stay with him.
Wen Peng felt only disgust and mocked his father by mentioning how happy his mother seemed after remarrying. He said she looked over ten years younger than his father, deliberately provoking him.
