Lu Yan quickly explained that she had no such intention. Wen Peng became agitated and forcefully pulled her into his arms.
At that moment, Jiang Chengyi arrived at the hospital to take Lu Yan home. Hearing her shouting, he approached the duty room and shoved Wen Peng aside. Wen Peng got up from the ground and once again asked Lu Yan if she would be with him. Frightened, Lu Yan hid behind Jiang Chengyi, shaking her head. Seeing this, Wen Peng had no choice but to leave.
As he walked out of the hospital, he drank from a bottle of alcohol, hoping to get drunk but remaining painfully sober, drowning in his anguish and despair. Yu Zheng and Liu Hao tracked down Ma Cheng at a mahjong table in Chengzhou. Ma Cheng admitted he had been Yan Mei’s caregiver back then. He had only met the employer once when he took the job.
Afterward, all communication was over the phone, and the payment was always made to his bank account on time. When Yan Mei’s condition deteriorated to the point where recovery was impossible, the employer arranged for her to be discharged and sent home. Ma Cheng claimed he didn’t inquire about what happened afterward. Ma Cheng took the two to Yan Mei’s home, which was covered in dust. Liu Hao found a cigarette butt under the refrigerator.
Ma Cheng stated he didn’t smoke, suggesting someone else had been in the house besides the three of them. The bite marks on the cigarette butt were unusual, prompting Yu Zheng to instruct Liu Hao to prepare two packs of cigarettes and offer them to anyone suspicious nearby. Following Yu Zheng’s lead, Jiang Chengyi interrogated Li Ruonan again, but she still refused to say anything.
When Jiang Chengyi mentioned Yan Mei’s hospitalization, the worsening of her condition, her discharge without further treatment, and the absence of any travel records, Li Ruonan seemed to grasp the implication but refused to believe her mother was dead. She stammered that someone had shown her photos of her mother. Observing her emotional reaction, Jiang Chengyi felt more confident in his investigation's direction. Zhong Wenxuan and Yuan Dalu posed as university students looking for jobs to meet with Manager Ke.
Manager Ke fell for the trap and claimed he could arrange a job as long as they paid him. Zhong Wenxuan secretly recorded the conversation. When they met Manager Ke in person, Zhong Wenxuan threatened him with the recording. Manager Ke had no choice but to admit he had no IP rights and that Wen Peng had instructed him to scam Zhong Wenxuan into investing. Because he owed Wen Peng money, he had to comply.
Zhong Wenxuan confronted Wen Peng, demanding to know why he had played him. Wen Peng replied that Zhong Wenxuan had done too much for Jiang Chengyi, including helping to bring Lu Yan and Jiang Chengyi together, which Wen Peng found intolerable and felt he needed to teach him a lesson. Furious, Zhong Wenxuan grabbed Wen Peng by the collar, ready to retaliate.
However, noticing the red bracelet on his wrist that Tang Jie had bought him and remembering he was about to become a father, he calmed down and let go. When Yu Zheng returned to her hotel room, she sensed someone was following her. She discreetly called Liu Hao, who went outside but didn’t spot anyone suspicious. They immediately checked the hotel surveillance footage and discovered the stalker was Yu Baifeng.
Liu Hao speculated that after being released from prison, Yu Baifeng had come to Chengzhou and, given his animosity toward Wang Dan, was likely planning revenge. Yu Zheng and Liu Hao continued their investigation at the crematorium, searching for any cremation records of Yan Mei. They found none, but the manager showed a particular interest in their inquiry. After a brief chat, Yu Zheng offered the manager a cigarette. The manager bit down on the cigarette in a manner that matched the unusual marks on the cigarette butt found at Yan Mei’s house.
