Shen Qilan was getting married, and her natal family went all out for the wedding, decorating lavishly—an even grander affair than a main wife’s wedding. Shen Qilan sat excitedly by the mirror, dressing up. Shen Jiangli came to offer her congratulations. Because her daughter was marrying into the Lu family, Concubine Zou had become even more arrogant.
When she saw Shen Jiangli touch one of Shen Qilan’s hair ornaments, she immediately scorned it, claiming that anything touched by someone who had kept vigil at the ancestral tomb was unlucky, and threw it aside on the table. Shen Jiangli saw this but forced herself to suppress the anger in her heart. When Shen Qilan saw that Lu Jingshu had sent red wedding candles for the ceremony, she was thrilled—such candles were usually reserved for the main wife.
Concubine Zou immediately instructed Shen Qilan that if the candles could burn through the wedding night, she and her husband would surely grow old together. These words stirred painful memories in Shen Jiangli’s heart. She remembered her own wedding night six years ago: due to urgent military matters on the front lines, Lu Jingming had been summoned away and did not return until the following afternoon.
The candle had been blown out by a cold wind the moment Lu Jingming left. Thinking back, perhaps that candle had been a bad omen. Feeling downcast, Shen Jiangli stepped outside for some air. Shen Jiangli decided to quietly visit Concubine Tian’s quarters. Finding no one there, she opened the drawers and discovered her mother’s bracelet inside a jewelry box. Why would her mother’s bracelet be in Concubine Tian’s room? Shen Jiangli quickly took the bracelet and hid it. Before long, Concubine Tian returned, grinning smugly as if something had gone wrong with Shen Qilan’s wedding. Back in Shen Qilan’s room, Shen Jiangli found out the problem was with the wedding dress.
It was supposed to have been delivered that morning from the main residence, but the dress Wang Danling had sent via her maid Yuzhu had been deliberately cut and ruined—completely unwearable. Yuzhu’s tone was full of disdain as she claimed there was a backup wedding robe. When Shen Jiangli examined the intact garment, she realized it had been worn by Wang Danling on her own wedding day.
Seeing her daughter become a laughingstock before even entering the Lu household, Concubine Zou anxiously begged Shen Jiangli for help. Remembering that Shen Qilan was innocent and had always treated her kindly, Shen Jiangli decided to lend a hand and resolved the crisis for her. At last, Shen Qilan, dressed appropriately, was married into the Lu family. Lu Jingshu personally received her, and the two entered the banquet with affectionate glances.
Just as they were about to perform the wedding bow, Wang Danling deliberately caused a scene by grabbing Shen Qilan’s robe in front of everyone, accusing her of wearing the main wife’s wedding attire and questioning whether she had wicked intentions. Shen Qilan was so startled she turned pale with fear, and the guests at the banquet began whispering and snickering. Lu Jingshu’s face darkened with embarrassment.
Shen Jiangli stepped forward and clarified that the wedding robe Shen Qilan wore was her own, and that the robe Yuzhu delivered had been so tattered it was unwearable. She had stepped in to help, saving the Lu family from disgrace. Seeing that the robe was indeed not hers, Wang Danling retreated resentfully—her scheme had backfired.
After the banquet, Lu Jingshu gave Wang Danling a fierce glare and warned her to be more mindful in the future, hoping such a disgraceful incident would never happen again. That night, Lu Jingming also redecorated his sleeping quarters to resemble a wedding night. Holding Shen Jiangli by the shoulder, he apologized for the wedding that had come too late and promised to treasure her from now on, never again allowing anything to harm her.
