> Perfect Match Recap
At the Jinluan Hall examination, Du Yangxi, a scholar renowned for his exceptional talents, was selected as the third place in the imperial examination, the "Tan Hua" (Top Scholar). As he rode through the streets on horseback, the crowd of citizens gathered to watch him. Among them was a daughter of an official, Yu Xiu'e, who, upon seeing him, remembered him instantly with just one glance. Soon, the families of Du and Li began arranging for a marriage.
Initially, Du Yangxi had requested to marry the third daughter of the Li family, but since Kang Ning had already married Chai An, Madam Li could not bear to give up the "Tan Hua" son-in-law and instead arranged for her eldest daughter, Li, to take her younger sister's place. Du Yangxi's mother, remembering past kindnesses, nodded in approval, but Du Yangxi, still harboring resentment, married Shou Hua without displaying much warmth.
On their wedding night, Du Yangxi intentionally neglected Shou Hua, leaving her to sit alone through the night while he turned in without lifting her veil and fell asleep. The next morning, he left for the Dongjing Temple to attend a meeting, ignoring Shou Hua entirely. Despite this, Shou Hua, as the daughter-in-law, dutifully greeted Du's mother early the next day and hid the fact that Du Yangxi had ignored her.
Observing Du's mother spinning yarn, Shou Hua took the initiative to help, even though she had no experience with spinning. Still, she humbly learned from Du's mother, who was patient in teaching her. When Shou Hua returned to her family’s home for her first visit, Chun Lai was quick to inform everyone of what had transpired. The sisters were furious and vowed to confront the "Tan Hua" scholar.
Madam Li was similarly enraged, believing Du Yangxi to be an ungrateful man who dared neglect her daughter. She immediately decided to go to Dongjing Temple to confront him. Shou Hua hurriedly stopped her, assuring her that she would handle the matter and discipline her husband. Kang Ning, feeling guilty, was reassured by Shou Hua, who told her there was no need for apologies among sisters. Meanwhile, Ling Yao helped the drunken Sang Yanrang back to his residence.
He had suffered alcohol poisoning, leading to internal bleeding, but fortunately, Shou Hua had quickly sent someone for medical treatment and cared for him. Fan Lianghan and Chai An called Du Yangxi to a meeting at Pan Lou. Du Yangxi, aware that they were trying to mediate for Shou Hua, mocked them, calling them henpecked.
In truth, Du Yangxi did not intend to deliberately slight Shou Hua; his anger stemmed from the Li family’s broken promises, particularly their decision to swap daughters. This left him with some lingering resentment. Chai An advised Du Yangxi to cherish his new wife, Shou Hua, noting that she was not only beautiful and talented but also of high moral character. He assured Du Yangxi that if he truly got to know her, he would be delighted.
Following this, Fan Lianghan had Du Yangxi confined at home to spend time with Shou Hua. Du Yangxi, frustrated, went to see his mother, but she too scolded him for his actions, urging him to apologize to his wife first. Left with no other choice, Du Yangxi entered the room and was surprised to find it thoughtfully arranged, with paintings and calligraphy created by Shou Hua herself. In addition, Du Yangxi overheard Sang Yanrang praising Shou Hua.
Her meticulous care was evident in the well-organized room and her clean clothes. When he questioned further, he learned that Shou Hua had personally arranged everything. Just then, Shou Hua, accompanied by Chun Lai, brought food to Sang Yanrang. Du Yangxi, observing her graceful and gentle demeanor, fell in love with her at first sight, forgetting all his previous grievances. However, Shou Hua, determined to teach him a lesson, purposely ignored him.
It was because of her combination of beauty, intellect, kindness, and filial piety, as well as her care for friends, that Du Yangxi realized how lucky he was to have married such an outstanding woman. As Du Yangxi dined with Sang Yanrang, he became more and more discontented, sarcastically remarking that his wife seemed more like a wife to Sang Yanrang than to him, as she attended to him in every way.
Sang Yanrang, upset with Du Yangxi for neglecting Shou Hua, scolded him and kicked him out. That evening, Du Yangxi attempted to talk to Shou Hua, but she ignored him and even slept on a separate bed. Later, she claimed she was coughing and insisted he sleep in a side room. Du Yangxi, regretful of his actions, rushed to Fan Lianghan and Chai An for advice.
Fan Lianghan suggested that Du Yangxi kneel and apologize, while Chai An advised him to win Shou Hua's favor through poetry, since she had an appreciation for the arts. Du Yangxi was overjoyed at the idea and immediately wrote a letter to Shou Hua, only for her to return a blank sheet of paper. Chai An, noticing this, quickly made up an excuse to lead Du Yangxi to believe that Shou Hua had feelings for him.
He wrote another letter, but unfortunately, their relationship remained strained. As the Cold Food Festival approached, Kang Ning and the others prepared food boxes for Shou Hua, filled with dishes made by her mother and sisters. Du’s mother arranged for Sang Yanrang to dine with them. Du Yangxi, observing Shou Hua’s busy morning, became even more fond of her.
However, Du Yangxi had also gained the emperor's favor, as well as the admiration of the Minister of Personnel, Yu Shouxin, who invited him to ride together. Other scholars, envious of his success, began gossiping behind his back. Just as Du Yangxi was about to reprimand them, a stranger scholar, Yan Zimei, stepped forward and courageously scolded them. Du Yangxi, grateful, stepped forward to thank him, and the two of them celebrated with drinks.
