The hairpins from Four Blessings Studio were selling exceptionally well. A woman from the Yu family placed a large order and even sent an invitation to the Li sisters for the Summer Flower Festival, inviting them to enjoy the flowers together. On the day of the event, Du Yangxi bought a golden hairpin for Shou Hua, hoping to accompany her to the banquet, but Shou Hua politely declined. While ironing clothes, Run Yue accidentally damaged a garment.

Instead of blaming her, Shou Hua showed concern for whether she was burned, which deeply moved Run Yue. Originally, Run Yue wanted to stop Shou Hua from attending the banquet, but Shou Hua felt that suddenly canceling would be impolite, so she wore an old dress and brought her sisters along to the Yu residence. At the flower appreciation banquet, Yu Xiu’e deliberately showed goodwill towards Shou Hua, trying to get closer to her.

Shou Hua had already realized that Run Yue was a spy placed by Yu Xiu’e at her side, so she purposely sent Kang Ning away. Meanwhile, Chai An had found Yan Zimei’s whereabouts and ordered his men to capture him back to Bianjing. He forced him to reveal the truth about how Madam Cui framed Fan Lianghan that day, or he would be sent straight to the authorities. Yan Zimei tearfully claimed that he, too, was coerced by others.

Similarly, Shou Hua pointed out that Yan Zimei was acting under Yu Xiu’e’s orders. Upon hearing this, Yu Xiu’e showed no surprise and instead openly admitted it. She hinted that Shou Hua should give up Du Yangxi and even offered to introduce her to a more prestigious match, allowing her to become a prince’s consort. Hearing Yu Xiu’e’s words, Shou Hua furiously left with her sisters.

On the way back, she shared the incident with them, and everyone felt that even if Shou Hua was unmoved by temptation, there was no guarantee that Du Yangxi wouldn’t be drawn to the Yu family’s power. However, once Du Yangxi understood Shou Hua’s concerns, he personally went to the Yu residence to lay everything bare and ease her worries.

When Prime Minister Yu Chuiyi learned about it, he flew into a rage and interrogated Yu Xiu’e himself, even preparing to punish her severely for her shameless actions. At the critical moment, Madam Yu hurried over to intervene, trying to persuade him otherwise. Yu Chuiyi rebuked her, saying that an unprincipled mother would raise an unprincipled daughter. After he left, Yu Xiu’e declared that she would marry no one but Du Yangxi and begged her mother to help her.

Out of deep maternal love, Madam Yu began scheming to take Du Yangxi from Shou Hua. The next morning, Madam Du, accompanied by Madam Li, personally went to the temple to offer incense in gratitude. However, Madam Yu had her taken to the Yu residence for a discussion. When Madam Li couldn’t find her, she grew anxious and quickly informed Du Yangxi. Meanwhile, the wise and perceptive Madam Du feigned ignorance and tactfully declined the marriage proposal.

This displeased Madam Yu, who detained her. Fortunately, a maid named Sang Ma understood the gravity of the situation and secretly climbed over the wall to deliver the message. Upon receiving the news, Du Yangxi rushed to the Yu residence. However, Madam Yu had already instructed the servants not to offer him a seat or tea if he came, deliberately making things difficult for him.

As a result, he was left standing outside for a full hour until nightfall before he was finally allowed in. The butler led Du Yangxi to the study, where he finally saw Madam Du. Only after confirming that she was safe did he relax. Just as Du Yangxi was about to take his mother away, Yu Chuiyi arrived in time to apologize to him.

Upon hearing Yu Chuiyi’s voice, Madam Du instinctively clutched Du Yangxi’s clothing, looking anxious and urging him to leave immediately. This reaction caught Yu Chuiyi’s attention. Later, Shou Hua personally attended to Madam Du’s rest, while Du Yangxi stayed by her bedside. Seeing her restless sleep and hearing her call out his name in her dreams, he felt a pang in his heart. At that moment, Du Yangxi suddenly recalled Madam Du’s strange reaction at the Yu residence.

He took out a jade pendant from his sleeve, beginning to suspect that his mother and Yu Chuiyi must have known each other in the past. At dawn, Shou Hua and Sang Ma were busy in the courtyard when Sang Yanrang hurried over to find Du Yangxi.

Pulling him into the room, he revealed that while the top three scholars—Zhuangyuan, Bangyan, and Tanhua—had all been assigned to government positions, others were sent to prosperous regions, whereas Du Yangxi had been assigned to Xiongzhou, a borderland. Sang Yanrang believed that as a newcomer to officialdom with no strong backing in court, Du Yangxi might struggle to make any achievements and could even invite trouble.

While his personal gains or losses were minor, the implications for the country were not to be taken lightly—it was clear that someone had deliberately arranged this as a challenge.
