Although Sang Yanrang analyzed the situation for Du Yangxi, Du Yangxi felt it was not a big deal and decided to take Shou Hua with him to his new post. Hearing this, Sang Yanrang grew anxious and confessed that he had once been helped by Shou Hua and had met her before. He had fallen for her at first sight and thus urged Du Yangxi to treat Madam Li well. Later, Yu Chuiyi personally invited Du Yangxi to his residence.

There, Du Yangxi noticed that the "Fang" character on the plaque in Yu Chuiyi’s study was identical in style to the one on his jade pendant. Coupled with his mother’s previous unusual reactions, his suspicions deepened. After this meeting, the imperial court appointed Du Yangxi as a Supervisor of the Construction Bureau and granted him a position in the Imperial Archives, allowing him to remain in the capital. However, his mother did not appear pleased.

Instead, Madam Li was overjoyed and enthusiastically prepared a grand feast to celebrate Du Yangxi. But unexpectedly, Du Yangxi, the main guest, never showed up. The atmosphere at the dinner table grew heavy, and even after the meal was finished, he still had not appeared, infuriating Madam Li. That night, as Fan Lianghan and Chai An walked home, Chai An grumbled about how Du Yangxi, having suddenly risen in status, had even refused to give his mother-in-law face, which was infuriating.

As they passed through the marketplace, they unexpectedly saw Du Yangxi secretly meeting with Yu Xiu'e. Chai An stormed off in anger, while Fan Lianghan gasped in shock. When Du Yangxi returned home, he saw Shou Hua sleeping restlessly and felt a pang of sympathy. He wanted to kiss her forehead but held back. Shou Hua slowly opened her eyes, leaned on his shoulder, and told him about her nightmares.

Du Yangxi was relieved that she was finally opening up to him, yet at the same time, he felt despair about their future—perhaps it was already too late. The next morning, Du Yangxi’s mother scolded him for lacking the manners of a son-in-law, as he had even skipped his mother-in-law’s banquet. Out of anger, she refused to eat breakfast and went straight back to her room. Because of this, Du Yangxi spoke to Shou Hua with a cold attitude.

Even Sang Yanrang couldn’t stand it and rebuked him for his arrogance, declaring that from now on, he would sever all ties with him. Without hesitation, Sang Yanrang packed his belongings and left. Soon after, Du Yangxi brought two women, Jin Nu and Fu Fu, home as concubines. When his mother found out, she furiously scolded him for forgetting his roots. Sang Ma assigned the two women to help with household chores, but this enraged Du Yangxi.

He berated her, saying that as a mere servant, she had no right to oppress his concubines. As he spoke, he raised a whip to strike her, but instead, he accidentally injured Shou Hua. That night, Sang Ma personally tended to Shou Hua’s wounds before leaving. Shou Hua felt that Du Yangxi’s drastic change in behavior must have a reason. Du Yangxi bluntly told her that he did not want her to suffer alongside him, so he proposed a divorce.

Shou Hua had never imagined that he saw her in such a way and immediately packed her belongings to return to her family home. After returning home, Shou Hua’s sisters were outraged and began planning ways to punish Du Yangxi. Madam Li, holding back her temper, advised Shou Hua not to act rashly and assured her that Du Yangxi would surely come the next day to apologize in person. However, things did not go as expected.

Du Yangxi did visit, but he came to personally deliver the divorce letter, stating his firm decision to separate from Shou Hua. At first, Madam Li tried to persuade him with kind words. However, seeing that Du Yangxi was as stubborn as a rock and determined to annul the marriage, she flew into a rage and scolded him harshly. Meanwhile, Shou Hua wept bitterly in her room.

Seeing this, Ling Yao hurriedly took Du Yangxi back to his residence to pack his things. However, Du Yangxi’s mother adamantly refused to leave, furiously rebuking him for forgetting his place after gaining wealth and status. Just then, someone from the Li family arrived to deliver a message to Du Yangxi’s mother, saying that if she wished to stay, she was welcome to remain in the courtyard and continue living as before.

Du Yangxi knelt before his mother, but she was so overwhelmed with grief that she attempted to hang herself. However, she accidentally fell to the ground. Shou Hua rushed over to console her, though a seed of doubt began to form in her heart. Meanwhile, Kang Ning, the third sister, was indignant on behalf of her elder sister and demanded that Chai An sever ties with Du Yangxi.

Chai An had no choice but to agree, declaring that from now on, Du Yangxi was his sworn enemy, and if he dared to show up again, he would be driven out immediately.
