Du Yangxi sat alone outside Pan Lou for an entire night. When morning came, he was finally able to meet Chai An, but Chai An treated him with cold indifference. Chai An coldly remarked that Du Yangxi, having passed the imperial examination, had now shed his humble wife, and would soon marry a noblewoman, enjoying the full benefits of a high-ranking official. He would be an honored groom on his wedding night, truly basking in the glory of success.

However, Du Yangxi showed no emotional reaction to these words. He had come to ask Chai An to help him conceal a matter, and later, to ensure his body was properly dealt with after death and his soul properly settled. Shou Hua went out with her sisters to relax, but the news of her divorce from Du Yangxi had spread throughout the city. " Meanwhile, Madam Li sought out a matchmaker to arrange a marriage for Shou Hua, but she could not find a suitable son-in-law. Suddenly, Du Yangxi dropped the red silk and performed three bows to Yu Weiyi instead. The first bow was to thank Yu Weiyi for recommending him; the second was to apologize for marrying Yu Xiu'e, stating that he already had a wife and could not accept the marriage; and the third bow was to express his gratitude for his mother’s upbringing and to avenge her death. This declaration caused a stir among the guests.

Fan Lianghan tried to approach Du Yangxi but was stopped by Chai An, who advised him to observe carefully. After Yu Xiu'e was taken away by a servant, Madam Yu became furious, ordering her servants to stop Du Yangxi from revealing more past secrets. Chai An quickly subdued the servants and insisted that Yu Weiyi should let Du Yangxi speak. Du Yangxi then publicly revealed a story from 28 years ago.

At that time, in Jiangling Prefecture, there lived a father-daughter pair named the Xie family. They had once saved the destitute scholar Yu Weiyi, feeding him, providing medical care, and ultimately saving his life. Since Yu Weiyi had no living parents and no place to turn, Old Man Xie married his daughter, Xie Qiufang, to Yu Weiyi. The couple became very close, and they treated Old Man Xie with utmost respect. However, fate was unkind.

The next day, a flood ravaged the village, submerging homes and fields. Old Man Xie died of heart failure from the shock. Fortunately, Xie Qiufang was a diligent and resourceful woman. She continued weaving cloth day and night and encouraged her husband to study hard to prepare for the exams. To raise the necessary funds, she sold herself as a maid for three years, earning only 120 coins.

Du Yangxi continued to recount how his mother, Xie Qiufang, had accompanied Yu Weiyi on his official journey when they encountered a storm at sea. She had a chance to survive, but Yu Weiyi, eager to please the Fan family, let her fall into the raging river. Her fate remained unknown. At first, Yu Weiyi thought that with Xie Qiufang dead, he could marry into the Fan family and enjoy a life of wealth and high rank.

Little did he know, Xie Qiufang had befriended a maid named Qian’er, who was Du Yangxi’s adoptive mother. Qian’er desperately saved her, and the two women were washed ashore by the waves. They were stranded in a foreign land. Xie Qiufang was pregnant at the time and gave birth to Du Yangxi in a small temple.

She later died from illness, leaving Qian’er to raise Du Yangxi, though she was disfigured due to the Fan family's hired thugs and had to live under a false identity. Upon hearing Du Yangxi’s account, Yu Weiyi was stunned. When confronted by his son’s questions, he became furious. Du Yangxi, seeing the guilt in his father’s eyes, asked why he had not saved his wife, Xie Qiufang, when she had helped him survive by his side in the flood. After asking this question, Du Yangxi immediately went to the Kaifeng Prefecture to file a petition and turn himself in.
