Shen Huizhao’s mother’s niece, Fang Yuchan, suddenly arrived at the Shen residence, bringing a jade pendant as a token and demanding that the Shen family fulfill the marriage promise made years ago. Shen Madam Dowager was greatly shocked upon seeing this. As Cui Mama mediated the situation, she hesitated over whether to welcome Fang Yuchan into the household. At that moment, Hao De entered from outside, snatched the jade pendant, and thanked Fang Yuchan for returning the token.

She then declared that she was Shen Huizhao’s rightful wife, married through an official matchmaker. Fang Yuchan felt both humiliated and furious, bursting into tears as she ran out. Shen Madam Dowager pitied Fang Yuchan for being alone and having nowhere else to turn. She believed that even if Fang Yuchan couldn’t be the primary wife, she should at least be accepted as a concubine.

However, Hao De firmly refused the proposal, stating that the daughters of the Li family must marry men who will take only one wife for life, forbidding them from keeping maidservants as concubines or taking additional wives. She insisted that she could not set a precedent, or she would be unable to face her sisters, as their husbands might follow suit. Hao De understood that all women wished for their husbands’ undivided devotion.

Even Shen Madam Dowager, having endured the pain of a three-wife household, could not bear the thought. Seeing that Hao De had spoken directly to her heart, Shen Madam Dowager chose not to interfere any further. Meanwhile, although Shen Huizhao outwardly distanced himself from Hao De, he was still concerned about her. He stood outside, listening to the conversation, and only felt at ease after confirming that she had not been punished.

Shen Huizhao had assumed that Hao De would back down after facing his cold treatment. Unexpectedly, she became even more proactive in approaching him, and he found himself unable to manage his cases without her assistance. The next day, Shen Huizhao, still ill, proceeded with the interrogation of the Deng family case. A servant from the Deng household, Yao Niu, voluntarily confessed.

He claimed that Ji Shi had an affair with him, became pregnant, and faked a difficult labor to feign death. The plan was for her to be exhumed and then elope with him. This revelation caused an uproar throughout the city. Gossip spread, accusing Ji Shi of being morally corrupt. Meanwhile, the Deng family’s relatives gathered daily outside the Kaifeng government office, pleading for Deng Jingfu’s release. Hearing Yao Niu’s entire testimony in the courtroom, Hao De grew more suspicious.

She privately offered a strategy to Shen Huizhao, inspiring him to feign discovering arsenic poisoning in the corpse to force the criminals to reveal the truth. Sure enough, Yao Niu panicked, terrified of being convicted for murder. In his desperation, he shifted the blame to Deng Shi, claiming that she had bribed him with fifty strings of coins to provide false testimony and frame Ji Shi. To prove his innocence, he revealed the whereabouts of the money.

Meanwhile, Ji Shi’s maid, Ah Tao, provided a detailed account of her mistress’s murder. Eventually, Deng Shi confessed that she had killed Ji Shi with a silver needle to clear the way for her son to marry a noblewoman. However, she had not expected Ji Shi to still be alive after the attempt. Deng Jingfu begged for mercy on behalf of his mother, but Shen Huizhao remained unmoved. He sentenced Deng Shi to death by dismemberment, as per the law.

Meanwhile, Fang Yuchan, unable to see Shen Huizhao despite multiple attempts, was persuaded by Cui Mama to request an audience with him under the pretense of handing over a relic from her father. She deliberately acted pitiful. However, Shen Huizhao was entirely focused on his casework and remained indifferent toward her. Hao De, anticipating Fang Yuchan’s scheme, entered her room ahead of time, thwarting her seduction attempt.

Later, Shen Huizhao met with Fang Yuchan and bluntly told her that if she married into the Shen family, she would not enjoy wealth and glory but would instead be in constant danger. Fang Yuchan, frightened by his words, dared not speak further. Sensing her fear, Shen Huizhao promised to arrange a dowry for her and find her a suitable match. Understanding the situation, Fang Yuchan wisely agreed.

Feeling hurt and frustrated by Shen Huizhao’s continued coldness, Hao De angrily declared that she wanted a divorce. She packed her belongings and left the Shen residence. Du Yangxi stepped in to persuade Shen Huizhao, but Shen Huizhao firmly explained that he wanted to give Hao De the chance to grow stronger and more independent rather than relying on him. Du Yangxi pondered his words and seemed to understand his reasoning.

After returning to her maiden home, Hao De discussed the matter with her sisters. Kang Ning, who was skilled at handling husbands, advised Hao De to use both kindness and firmness in dealing with Shen Huizhao. The Li family sent back the betrothal gifts. Seeing this, Shen Huizhao felt a pang of sorrow. However, to his surprise, Hao De suddenly jumped out of a chest and once again professed her love for him. Moved by Hao De’s unwavering devotion, Shen Huizhao finally relented and agreed to let her stay. The two reconciled and reunited.
