Perfect Match Episode 9 Recap
> Perfect Match Recap
That night, Du Yangxi returned from visiting a friend and learned that his mother had been taken to the Li family’s residence. He rushed over to express his gratitude to Madam Li. Madam Li was delighted to see mother and son reunited and ordered additional dishes to be prepared. She instructed them to finish their meal before heading back home.
Du Yangxi’s mother reminded him to always be grateful and not to act arrogantly like others who believed that achieving success would allow them to marry into higher status. Du Yangxi understood her words and stated that he would personally visit the Li family tomorrow to propose marriage. Meanwhile, Shou Hua noticed that Kang Ning seemed unsettled. She asked Qiong Nu to falsely claim that Chai An had been injured.
As expected, upon hearing the news, Kang Ning immediately tried to run out, only to be stopped by Shou Hua. Realizing that Kang Ning still had lingering feelings for Chai An, Shou Hua advised her to reflect on her true emotions before the Li and Du families finalized their engagement. Kang Ning wavered upon hearing this. Just then, Chai An came to see Kang Ning. Overjoyed, she intended to express her feelings to him.
However, Chai An instead made several disparaging remarks about the Li family. These words ignited Kang Ning’s fury. She retorted that although Chai An claimed he never looked down on her, everything he said suggested otherwise. She declared that she would never tolerate anyone insulting the Li family. Even if she couldn’t find a husband and ended up living out her days at the Li residence, she would never set foot in the Chai household again.
With that, the two parted on bad terms, and Kang Ning officially became engaged to Du Yangxi. Chai An drowned his sorrows in alcohol at Panlou while listening to music. Fan Lianghan rushed in to inform him of the engagement, blaming him for saying such hurtful things when he supposedly wanted to marry Kang Ning.
Fan Lianghan explained that Madam Li’s third daughter had been willing to reconcile with him and would have accepted the marriage if he had only spoken kindly. However, now that more resentment had formed between them, there was no turning back. Chai An, however, refused to accept this and resented Madam Li for treating the marriage like a transaction. He believed that the Li family was cold and calculating.
Seeing this, Fan Lianghan had no choice but to reveal the Li family’s past—how they had been bullied by their clan after becoming widowed and orphaned, how their wealth and belongings had been plundered, and how Madam Li had been forced to become fierce and unyielding to protect her five daughters. After hearing this, Chai An felt both guilty and regretful.
When his mother once again urged him to marry, he replied bitterly that since Madam Li’s third daughter was marrying someone else, her goal had already been achieved. On the first day of the provincial examination, Madam Li woke Kang Ning early. Accompanied by her eldest sister, Kang Ning reluctantly prepared a box of "Ding Sheng Gao" (victory cakes) for Du Yangxi.
On the eve of the results announcement, the imperial family happened to be on an outing, and many bystanders dropped their belongings in the commotion. Hao De and Le Shan pestered their third sister into taking them "street sweeping" for lost items. Left with no choice, Kang Ning took Qiong Nu and accompanied her younger sisters in secret. During this outing, Kang Ning picked up an ornate hairpin that looked exactly like the one she had previously broken.
Suspecting that Chai An had intentionally placed it there, she took it back to her room. The next morning, word spread that a valuable item had gone missing from the palace. Kang Ning became uneasy and immediately told Qiong Nu. Qiong Nu speculated that it might be an item lost by the Empress herself. Since the matter was serious, Kang Ning and Qiong Nu devised a plan.
To avoid drawing suspicion, they decided to return the item late at night before dawn. However, just as they were about to act, Chai An suddenly appeared. He revealed that the hairpin was a gift for Kang Ning and reminisced about the bittersweet moments between them. Though touched by his sentiment, Kang Ning refused to accept his gift again, and they resolved to part ways for good.
Soon, Du Yangxi achieved first place in the provincial examination, and Madam Li was overjoyed, feeling certain that she had found the perfect son-in-law. The two families began wedding preparations. Upon learning of Kang Ning’s impending marriage to Du Yangxi, Chai An volunteered to board a merchant ship bound for the distant land of Dashi. His mother was shocked and frantically tried to dissuade him.
However, Chai An merely remarked that the second day of the second lunar month was supposed to be his wedding day—a statement that left his mother filled with regret. In a desperate attempt to stop Chai An, his mother personally visited Madam Li’s home to apologize and repeatedly begged for forgiveness, even kneeling to admit her mistakes. However, Madam Li only scoffed at her.
Finally, Chai An’s mother revealed the truth about their circumstances, hoping to appeal to Madam Li’s compassion as a fellow mother. Though Madam Li was momentarily moved, she ultimately refused. She had already received the Du family’s formal betrothal gifts, and in three days, the engagement would be finalized—there was no room left for change.
