Finally, Granny Ning spoke up, telling him that Xue Ziye was gone. Her tombstone stood there, and Huo Zhanbai’s eyes reddened with grief. He couldn’t accept it, remembering the moment he passed by Miao Feng, realizing too late.

Overwhelmed with anguish, he collapsed in front of her grave. When Huo Zhanbai regained consciousness, nothing had changed—Xue Ziye had indeed become only a tombstone. Master Liao explained the cause of her death; she had sealed her own throat with golden needles, ending her life. Until the end, she kept calling to return to Yaoshi Valley.

The three drank together, and Tong could see that Xue Ziye had loved Huo Zhanbai deeply, sacrificing their chance to be together to save him. The three of them looked toward Xue Ziye’s symbolic grave, raising their cups in honor of the one they had all loved. Their loved one was gone, and their cups were emptied.

Bearing the weight of his sins, Tong decided to shave his head, becoming a monk to atone and live a life of repentance by the light of the monastery’s lamps. Huo Zhanbai stayed at Yaoshi Valley, and over the years, he aged from a man in his twenties into an old man. Every day, he came to visit Xue Ziye’s grave, sharing a drink with her, his hair now white, his temples flecked with gray. In the end, he buried himself in the snow of Yaoshi Valley, spending the rest of his life cherishing the memory of his beloved.
