Smile Code Episode 16 Recap
> Smile Code Recap
Shen Zhimin watched as Liang Daiwen stood still, seemingly trying to reconstruct the image of his old home in his mind. Shen knew that Liang wanted to renovate his new house to resemble his old one, as that was the only way it would feel like home. After his thoughts were laid bare, Liang feigned composure and said he wasn’t used to his new place yet.
Shen, however, didn’t buy the excuse—it was obvious that what Liang missed wasn’t the house but Gu Yi. Having grown accustomed to Gu Yi’s presence, Liang was now forcing himself to push her away. Liang also knew deep down that his recent lack of appetite was because of Gu Yi. Shen wasn’t surprised by this. Previously, having Gu Yi around gave Liang a sense of normalcy, and thus he could eat. Now that she was gone, his anorexia had returned.
Shen believed that if Liang was struggling to adapt to his current life, it meant his body had already embraced the life he shared with Gu Yi. Shen advised Liang to follow his heart and accept his feelings for her. Gu Yi, meanwhile, was furious and wanted to leave because of President Zhang. Liang suspected that Zhang Qingya’s decision to reclaim her house wasn’t simple—it had to be a move to force Gu Yi out.
Shen disagreed, pointing out that Zhang was Liang’s senior and even a mentor of sorts. Despite this, he urged Liang to be cautious. Zhang Junjie noticed Gu Yi’s calmness and decided to have a conversation with her. He explained that the reason for not promoting her was to allow her to remain true to herself. He feared that being bound by an official position would rob her of her original vitality.
Guan Xingxin overheard President Huang complaining incessantly, and Zhang Junjie couldn’t help but retort. Left speechless, President Huang resorted to sending mocking text messages to Zhang behind his back. Yu Dule felt that Guan Xingxin was truly someone who resonated with his heart, to the point where he wanted to capture every moment of her walking.
Guan, a stand-up comedian, was constantly pressured by her family to attend matchmaking dates but couldn’t muster the courage to tell them she already had a boyfriend. She felt stifled by her family’s suffocating warmth and sometimes envied Gu Yi’s carefree lifestyle. Liang Daiwen couldn’t resist returning to his old house, haunted by memories of Gu Yi’s angry departure and the look of betrayal and hurt in her eyes. Those moments lingered vividly in his mind.
Gu Yi, lying in bed, reflected deeply, suspecting that she was the source of the pressure Liang had mentioned. At work, she couldn’t help but glance at messages from Liang. Yu Dule realized Gu Yi had approached him for help with her comedy performance. He also knew she wanted to win Liang back. Gu Yi asked Yu if he thought she didn’t fit Liang’s aesthetic preferences.
Xu Guanrui noticed Gu Yi’s sudden change in clothing style and couldn’t help but laugh. She wasn’t suited for high heels and rushed to take them off backstage, just as Xu walked in. Seeing Xu seriously tend to her injured feet, Gu Yi was touched. For a fleeting moment, Gu Yi almost thought she might fall for Xu Guanrui. He encouraged her to look further afield, suggesting there might be someone else worth noticing.
But Gu Yi merely said that the person she secretly loved was oblivious to her feelings, and she was willing to wait. Just then, Liang Daiwen appeared with an umbrella and saw Gu Yi and Xu chatting happily. Something in his heart felt off—a mix of complexity and displeasure that he couldn’t put into words. Gu Yi successfully rented a spacious new apartment. She reflected that while Liang Daiwen’s body seemed real, his soul felt empty.
Determined, she kept trying to understand what was going on in Liang’s mind, attempting to break through his emotional barriers. Liang, on the other hand, was conflicted, unsure of what to do next. He seemed to have made some progress with his emotional expression, finding himself speaking his thoughts aloud to a potted plant. Deep down, Liang missed Gu Yi terribly.
