Smile Code Episode 19 Recap
> Smile Code Recap
Gu Yi was hit in the tooth by a frisbee, losing a tooth and being sent to the hospital. Outside, Liang Daiwen seemed deeply troubled, his emotions heavy, though he was unaware of how apparent this was to others. Guan Xingxin noticed his unease but chose not to comment. Later, Gu Yi prepared grilled meat for Liang, who reluctantly ate it. Despite his inner turmoil, Liang thoughtfully wiped Gu Yi's hands.
Gu Yi suddenly felt touched by his attentiveness and, hearing him share stories from his difficult childhood, encouraged him to move on from the past and start anew. Gu Yi secretly took out the tooth she had just lost and vowed to herself that no matter how hard it was to pursue Liang, she would persist. That night, Liang and Gu Yi kissed.
As they made their way home, Liang felt as though he were dreaming, finally aware of a nervous excitement he hadn’t experienced in a long time. Before leaving the company, Liang was pressured by President Zhang into signing a contract that Zhang intended to use against him later. Although Liang initially refused, Zhang threatened him by involving Roger. Confused and frustrated, Liang didn’t understand why his senior insisted on clinging to him so tightly.
To keep Gu Yi safe, Liang called Roger, pretending his relationship with Gu Yi was just a bet he had with Shen Zhimin, dismissing its significance. At the same time, he discussed countermeasures with Shen and announced his plan to leave the country for treatment. Shen, surprised by Liang’s sudden cooperation, noted that Liang had previously been resistant to the idea. Liang admitted that he now had someone he cared about and couldn’t take risks.
At work, Gu Yi couldn’t stop herself from thinking about Liang and even wanted to call him. She appeared unusually cheerful, which made Zhang Junjie suspicious. Zhang wondered why President Zhang insisted that Gu Yi attend the day’s meeting. Gu Yi, oblivious, didn’t think much of it until she saw Liang sitting beside President Zhang at the meeting. Liang appeared expressionless, answering reporters’ questions with a blank face and showing no reaction toward Gu Yi.
When Zhang used Liang’s professional reputation to pressure him into taking the blame for a scandal, Gu Yi overheard and found it outrageous. Despite knowing the accusations were unfounded, Liang chose to shoulder the blame, much to Gu Yi’s disappointment. Unable to understand his silence, she left the meeting and confronted Liang. However, Liang dismissed her concerns, stating there was no need for such efforts between them and that they should simply go back to being friends.
Hurt and confused, Gu Yi wondered what she had done to deserve being abandoned so ruthlessly time and again. At times, she even suspected Liang was deliberately toying with her emotions. Seeing Liang’s indifferent demeanor, she slapped him and left. Zhang Junjie, noticing her distress, comforted her, though it was clear Gu Yi had reverted to the disheartened state she thought she’d left behind. Later, President Zhang visited Gu Yi’s company and specifically requested her for an interview.
Gu Yi felt Zhang’s actions against Liang were unjust and questioned him, but Zhang’s ambiguous responses only deepened her doubts. Determined, Gu Yi asked Xu Guanrui to help her find Liang. When she met Liang, he revealed his decision to go abroad. Although Gu Yi didn’t want him to leave, Liang firmly insisted on the necessity of his departure. He admitted he wasn’t worthy of Gu Yi in his current state.
Gu Yi, now disheartened, told him that it no longer mattered where he went, as it had nothing to do with her anymore. Liang, realizing how deeply he had hurt her, felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. In truth, Liang had approached Zhang Junjie to report himself for plagiarism, hoping to sever President Zhang’s control over him. He was even willing to ruin his own reputation to gain freedom. Deep in his heart, Liang vowed to achieve something significant and return to Gu Yi as a better man.
