Dong Leyi, meanwhile, lay at home every day, scrolling through each other’s Moments on WeChat but not daring to reach out. 2010, Beijing. Today was Little New Year. Zhou Shui had been in a slump in his rented room for a long time.
Even when he got a call from his father, he only shared good news and kept the bad to himself. The landlord showed up, saying she had entrusted the house to an agent to rent out, but was very dissatisfied with the current state and demanded they move out within three days or she would call the police. Gangling planned to look around the next day for a better place.
Wang Jingshu returned money to Dumbbell—she had been reported to her school for working off-campus as a fake marriage partner and was ordered to drop out, so she said she wouldn’t need the money anymore and wanted to go back to her hometown. Dumbbell asked what would happen to them in the future. Wang Jingshu didn’t answer. Lao Jiucai left, and everyone else began to go their separate ways.
Before Wang Jingshu left, Dumbbell hoped she would stay and even finally confessed his feelings. But Wang Jingshu only said, “Why didn’t you say it earlier? ” before she walked away. The landlord gave Zhou Shui and Dumbbell a final ultimatum: they had to move out before the Spring Festival. Zhou Shui brought over a whole box of Erguotou, saying they wouldn’t leave until it was finished.
But after the first sip, both of them gagged in unison—they simply couldn’t drink it. Back in her hometown, Dai Daji’s mother arranged a job and a dormitory for her. On her first day at work, Dai Daji was bored and didn’t know what she was supposed to do, but to everyone else, slacking off was the norm.
After work, when she got home, she found Jingjing and her boyfriend there, so she had to leave them alone for some private time. Dai Daji couldn’t get used to the structured government job back home. Zhou Shui and Dumbbell ended up finishing that whole box of Erguotou. Just when they didn’t expect it, Wang Jingshu came back. Dumbbell hugged her, and only after hearing that she wasn’t leaving again did he feel at ease—yet Zhou Shui remained alone.
Wang Jingshu wasn’t willing to return to her hometown. Having once come to Beijing, she knew she could no longer go back. Dumbbell was a bit disappointed—so she hadn’t stayed for him after all. Dumbbell and Wang Jingshu rented a new place together, leaving Zhou Shui alone in the previous apartment. During the Spring Festival, Dai Daji attended a class reunion and was asked if she had a boyfriend. Her heart wavered a little.
Zhou Shui continued to waste away in the rented room. When Lao Jiucai left, he had left behind a hundred dumplings. Zhou Shui didn’t know what he’d do if he finished eating all one hundred and Dai Daji still hadn’t come back. Suddenly, Hun Xiang showed up. She was getting married to her new boyfriend, and all her previous troubles had been resolved.
After hearing what Zhou Shui had gone through recently and seeing him drinking in a daze, Hun Xiang simply grabbed the bottle and started pouring it down his throat. In the end, Zhou Shui’s face was a blur of liquor and tears. Fireworks burst outside the window, and the dim yellow light cast shadows on Zhou Shui’s face. Dai Daji used a roadside phone booth to make a call—to Zhou Shui. But by then, Zhou Shui was already drunk.
Hun Xiang lay on top of him, covering his ears so he wouldn’t answer. By the time Zhou Shui sobered up, he had already missed the call. Even when he tried calling back, Dai Daji didn’t pick up.
