Ban Xia originally wanted to pretend not to hear, but Jiu Xuanye emphasized again that he was serious. Ban Xia didn’t understand why, and Jiu Xuanye reluctantly said that having too many people around him made him feel annoyed. Ban Xia held Jiu Xuanye’s hand and pleaded with him, also promising to call off the engagement soon. Suddenly, Ban Xia thought Jiu Xuanye might feel that being a demon hunter would bring her disaster.

Jiu Xuanye admitted this, saying he feared he couldn’t even protect himself, let alone protect Ban Xia, and that she shouldn’t be with a demon hunter. Tears streamed down Ban Xia’s face. Jiu Xuanye comforted her, saying everything would be better in time. But Ban Xia suddenly grew angry and warned Jiu Xuanye that matters of the heart involve two people—it’s not something he can decide on his own.

Ban Xia and Jiu Xuanye returned home in the rain, one behind the other. Ban Xia locked herself in her room and refused to come out. No matter how much Duan Yingheng knocked, it was useless. Ting Zhou brought ginger soup to Ban Xia, but she couldn’t drink it. Chu Youhuang went to Fa'en Temple and had someone notify Jiu Xuanye to come as well. It was said that wishes made at Fa'en Temple were especially effective.

The place was full of snakes, yet they never harmed people. It was there they discovered that Anxian had died, though her body showed no signs of poisoning. Chu Youhuang feared it might be related to a demon and asked Jiu Xuanye to take a look.

Ting Zhou noticed that Jiu Xuanye and Ban Xia were upset with each other, so she advised Ban Xia not to always be the one chasing, and that she should play a little hard to get. She suggested Ban Xia should learn from Tang Ruyun—Ban Xia used to be the beloved child, but now the lady of the house held the top position.

If Ban Xia wanted to be Jiu Xuanye’s wife, she should establish some rules and not be too forward. Ban Xia resolved to be cold toward Jiu Xuanye for a few days. But right after she said that, she heard Chi Xue calling loudly for her. When Ban Xia heard Jiu Xuanye was looking for her, she rushed over immediately, forgetting everything she had just vowed.

It turned out Jiu Xuanye only wanted to ask if she had seen a white crow on Anxian’s shoulder. Once confirmed she hadn’t, Jiu Xuanye and Chu Youhuang rushed to open Anxian’s coffin, only to find it empty. At that moment, Anxian had been resurrected in a room, but when she looked in the mirror, she found that she had become a man. A man named Chi Lian appeared behind her.

Jiu Xuanye and Chu Youhuang ran into Li Xian on the street, who was on his way to listen to music. Li Xian invited Jiu Xuanye to join, but he declined. Li Xian specially gave two bags of nuts he had bought to Chi Xue and asked him to deliver them to Ban Xia and Jiu Xuanye. That was when Chu Youhuang realized that Li Xian was Ban Xia’s fiancé.

Jiu Xuanye discovered that the snakes at Fa'en Temple were being controlled by someone, but he didn’t tell Chu Youhuang at the time for fear of alerting the culprit. Instead, he asked Chi Xue to investigate. Chi Xue was a little scared—he’d never heard of sending a rabbit to investigate snakes. Jiu Xuanye also vaguely felt that this demon was different from the usual. Chi Lian, who called himself Mr. Bai in public, was an exceptional musician.

Li Xian had followed him after hearing his music once. This time, learning that Mr. Bai was in Guangping, he came again just to hear him play and praised him greatly. Mr. Bai revealed his real name to Anxian and even showed her his true form—a snake—which frightened Anxian so much that she fainted on the spot. After Sima Lingying woke up, she tried to escape but was recaptured by Zi Kong.

Zi Kong knocked her out again and used the bloodstains on the handkerchief to cast a spell, hoping to continue tracking Jiu Xuanye’s whereabouts. At that moment, Jiu Xuanye ran into Ban Xia on the street on her way to break off her engagement. Ban Xia emphasized again and again that no one could force her to do something she didn’t want to do—she really just wanted to express her love to Jiu Xuanye.

But Jiu Xuanye merely replied faintly that he understood. This made Ban Xia furious, and she let her anger out on Jiu Xuanye, blaming him for being too self-righteous—she could also choose to stop loving him anytime. Just then, due to Zi Kong’s spell, his and Jiu Xuanye’s souls were swapped. Not recognizing Ban Xia, he questioned what this place was called and asked her to tell Jiu Xuanye that he would come looking for him.

Meanwhile, Jiu Xuanye’s soul entered Zi Kong’s body. Seeing Sima Lingying bound puzzled him. He looked into a water jar and saw a different face, which frightened him so much he fell to the ground, and their souls swapped back. Chi Lian had been waiting for Anxian to return. When Anxian was a child, she loved playing the zither. Back then, Chi Lian was just a little snake. After cultivating into human form, he had heard Anxian’s wishes.

But they were full of thoughts of killing, so he hadn’t acted immediately. After some time observing her, he saw that the two people around Anxian did indeed deserve to die, so he killed them. Then he faked Anxian’s death, covered her in his snake skin, and allowed her to transform into a man so she could go wherever she wanted. But Anxian had no ability to survive on her own.

Even with money, she quickly used it up and ended up kneeling to Chi Lian, begging him to let her stay. Jiu Xuanye told Chu Youhuang about Sima Lingying being taken and guessed she was being held in an abandoned temple near the capital. Afraid of bringing trouble to Chu Youhuang, Jiu Xuanye didn’t go with him but suspected that demon would come looking for him again. Ban Xia took the items from Chi Xue and went home, determined to resolve the issue of her and Li Xian’s engagement.
