The next day, Duan Banxia and Jiu Xuanye drank sweet soup together. Jiu Xuanye sent a letter to Lord Guan in Shendu, asking him to expose the truth about the apricot spirit through Qin Xuanzhi. Jiu Xuanye believed that demons shouldn't bully humans, but humans also shouldn't bully demons—this was the foundation of peaceful coexistence. Duan Banxia noticed that Chi Xue wasn't with Jiu Xuanye this time and felt a bit puzzled.

Jiu Xuanye explained that Chi Xue had been raised by his father and was considered family. He had never used any magic on Chi Xue, and Chi Xue came and went freely. After all, demons and humans couldn't always be together. Duan Banxia anxiously questioned him, insisting that humans and demons could be together—especially since she had already realized Jiu Xuanye was also a demon.

While trying on new clothes with Duan Banxia, the beads on her dress suddenly scattered to the floor, making her feel uneasy. Jiu Xuanye, waiting outside, also sensed something unusual in the wind. That night, Zi Kong suddenly arrived in the city and blew his flute. Chi Xue, awakened by the noise, quickly went out to check on Jiu Xuanye. But he saw a black panther escaping from Jiu Xuanye’s room, knocking Chi Xue over. Chi Xue fell unconscious.

It wasn't until the next day when Duan Banxia came to see Jiu Xuanye that she discovered Chi Xue unconscious. When Chi Xue woke up and recalled the demon from the night before, Duan Banxia rushed into the room and found the window in Jiu Xuanye’s room had been smashed. When Jiu Xuanye woke up, he found Zi Kong standing in front of him.

Zi Kong revealed that Jiu Xuanye was actually a mysterious panther demon, born in the Wuyou Realm, the root of all demon spirits. Every twelve years, the Wuyou grass within the realm would release its spirit energy, opening the secret realm and connecting it to the human world, allowing the energy to spread. The Wuyou Realm had always been guarded by panthers, and Zi Kong's father was the supreme king Le Yan. Zi Kong and Jiu Xuanye were brothers.

Jiu Xuanye's real name was Man Ying, second in the family, and he was a panther demon. Years ago, he broke the rules and entered the human world to save a little girl. Zi Kong scolded Jiu Xuanye for acknowledging powerless mortals as his parents and forgetting everything about their home. But Jiu Xuanye didn’t believe any of it. He insisted he was a demon hunter and wouldn't let Zi Kong insult his parents.

Furious, Jiu Xuanye tried to strike Zi Kong, but Zi Kong only dodged and didn’t fight back. Knowing it was meaningless to take him away by force, Zi Kong just hoped Jiu Xuanye would understand that he wasn’t human and would never be accepted here. If everyone learned he was just a demon, not a demon hunter, what would happen then? Before leaving, Zi Kong urged Jiu Xuanye to cherish his remaining time as a human.

Seeing the dead deer on the ground, Jiu Xuanye began to feel uncertain. Duan Banxia rushed to find Chu Youhuang and told him about Jiu Xuanye's situation, filled with worry. But Chu Youhuang believed Jiu Xuanye was fine, probably just out capturing a demon, and told Duan Banxia to wait at home. Just as she returned, she saw Jiu Xuanye come back. Anxiously, she asked about the demon, but Jiu Xuanye appeared absent-minded and told her to go home first.

Distraught, he returned home and asked Chi Xue what kind of demon they had encountered. After hearing Chi Xue describe a powerful and fast creature, Jiu Xuanye began to suspect it might have been his true form. To test whether he was a demon, Jiu Xuanye used a moon bug on his arm. The moon bug bit down where the talisman tattoo was damaged.

Jiu Xuanye recalled that his father had specially drawn the talisman on him and taught him how to use the moon bug. Back then, when the tattoo was intact, the moon bug couldn’t detect anything. When Jiu Xuanye came back from outside, Chu Youhuang and the others were at his home, concerned and planning to ask a hunter to help catch the demon.

Duan Banxia noticed Jiu Xuanye was distracted and held his hand, reminding him not to push himself too hard—tomorrow was their wedding day. She then kissed him. That night, Zi Kong once again played his flute. Hearing the sound, Jiu Xuanye went into a frenzy in his room. Chi Xue rushed upstairs and saw Jiu Xuanye transform into a black panther and leap out the window. Chi Xue chased after him.

On the way, the black panther scared a night watchman so badly he wet his pants. Rumors of a mysterious black panther demon quickly spread through the city. Duan Yanqiu and his father came to find Duan Yingheng and attend Duan Banxia and Jiu Xuanye’s wedding. Duan Yanqiu spoke highly of Jiu Xuanye, saying he was an excellent man, and Duan Yingheng was even more satisfied.

But after waiting a long time with no sign of Jiu Xuanye, everyone went to his home, only to find it empty. Hearing the street gossip and spotting a black steamed bun, Duan Banxia felt an ominous sense of unease. Chu Youhuang and Sima Lingying also rushed over. Sima Lingying thought of Zi Kong and sensed something was wrong—there might be some connection. Back in her room, Duan Banxia remembered seeing a leopard shadow in the painting before.

She couldn’t help but weep. Outside, Jiu Xuanye saw her crying and felt a sharp pain in his heart but didn’t dare enter. Ting Zhou came to deliver something and shouted upon seeing a figure. Duan Banxia guessed it was Jiu Xuanye and ran to the street to call for him. Suddenly, heavy rain began to fall. Duan Banxia slipped and fell, crying her heart out in the rain.

She murmured to herself that she had known about Jiu Xuanye’s identity all along but didn’t dare say it, fearing he would push her away. She just wanted to tell him that she really didn’t care. She begged him to come back again and again. Jiu Xuanye watched from a corner, heart aching. Duan Yingheng found her and took her away. Duan Banxia sat silently and dejectedly by the door.

Worried, Duan Yingheng handed her the letter Jiu Xuanye had sent. In it, Jiu Xuanye said the marriage was off. Duan Yingheng wanted to know why and questioned Duan Banxia, but she didn’t want to explain. Though Duan Yingheng thought Jiu Xuanye was fickle, he said nothing more out of gratitude. He suggested returning with Duan Yanqiu and the others to visit their grandmother, telling Duan Banxia to let go of things she couldn't figure out—time would solve everything.

Duan Banxia couldn't help but cry again. Duan Yingheng watched his daughter helplessly. Chi Xue finally found Jiu Xuanye and asked curiously why he had become a demon. But Jiu Xuanye suddenly lost control and struck down a tree with a single palm.
