The Demon Hunter's Romance Episode 36 (Ending) Recap
> The Demon Hunter's Romance Recap
Duan Yingheng and his wife planned to stay in a mountain temple for a few days. They instructed Duan Banxia not to run around or cause trouble at home. Duan Banxia and Ting Zhou went to the main street to admire the lanterns. Ting Zhou was always interested in the various lanterns along the street. Suddenly, fireworks lit up the sky, and Duan Banxia was momentarily stunned.
She then caught sight of Man Niang's figure and couldn't help but chase after her. However, after turning a corner, Man Niang’s figure disappeared. Feeling disappointed, Duan Banxia was about to leave when she heard the sound of bells. Mr. Pu appeared behind her and offered for her to pick something she liked. Duan Banxia picked up an echo conch, but Mr.
Pu refused to take money, claiming he had already received payment from her once and couldn’t accept it again. Duan Banxia placed the echo conch to her ear and heard the words she had once left inside—it seemed she had fallen in love with Jiu Xuanye. In an instant, all her memories returned vividly to Duan Banxia’s mind. She couldn’t hold back her tears, crying so hard she struggled to breathe.
Duan Banxia told Ting Zhou that she remembered everything now. The person's name was Jiu Xuanye, but everyone else had forgotten him. Mr. Pu urged Duan Banxia to quickly go find Jiu Xuanye. Without hesitation, Duan Banxia sprinted forward. Zi Kong and Man Niang arrived together at the underground city. Man Niang was heavy-hearted and only entered after Zi Kong urged her repeatedly.
Duan Banxia also arrived at the underground city and wanted to enter, but without a pass token, she gave all her money to the boatman, who then agreed to take her across. Duan Banxia blocked Man Niang’s path, crying with tear-streaked cheeks, and rushed to embrace Jiu Xuanye, calling out his name. The two returned to the house they had stayed in before.
Jiu Xuanye suggested tidying up, but Duan Banxia held tightly onto him, afraid he would leave and never come back. Jiu Xuanye told Duan Banxia that he could now freely travel between the human and spirit worlds to find the spirit of the Withering-Free Herb that could cure the decay. When he first opened his eyes, he had remembered everything.
Over the years, Jiu Xuanye had always been near Duan Banxia, silently eliminating the demons before they could appear in her life. Because of this, Chi Lian and Xing Xian also found happy endings, no longer suffering their original tragic fates. Shen Tunan, too, had become much more restrained compared to before. Though Duan Banxia hadn’t seen any demons, she spent her days eating, drinking, having fun, learning to ride horses, and practicing martial arts—living the life she wanted.
Yet she always felt inexplicably unhappy, as if something important was missing from her heart, something she could never recall. It wasn’t until she saw Jiu Xuanye again that she realized what she had lost. Duan Banxia clung to Jiu Xuanye, pleading with him not to leave her. Jiu Xuanye took care of Duan Banxia until she fell asleep, covering her with a blanket. Yet she still clutched his hand tightly, unwilling to let go.
Jiu Xuanye could only apologize helplessly to her. The next day, Jiu Xuanye escorted Duan Banxia back. She hoped Jiu Xuanye would tell Father Jiu everything and recognize their connection. However, Jiu Xuanye believed that even though Father Jiu understood karma, the emotional bond was already gone, and there was little meaning in revealing it. His only solace was that Duan Banxia remembered him, and that was enough. Seeing Jiu Xuanye sitting alone, Duan Banxia couldn’t help but hug him.
She suggested they happily visit all the places they had been to before, and Jiu Xuanye agreed, wanting only to be happy together. Jiu Xuanye and Duan Banxia ate sweet desserts together, watched lanterns together, listened to Xing Xian and Chi Lian playing the zither together, and set off fireworks together. Duan Banxia's smile never left her face.
She made a wish under a sky lantern, hoping for a heavy snowfall in Guangping City so she could grow old with Jiu Xuanye under the snow. Meanwhile, Jiu Xuanye wished for Duan Banxia to live a lifetime of happiness and worry-free peace. Duan Banxia once again confessed her feelings to Jiu Xuanye, begging him not to leave. However, Jiu Xuanye did not give an answer. Though disappointed, Duan Banxia still forced herself to smile.
Thinking of Duan Banxia’s wish, Jiu Xuanye used his magic to turn the rain into snowflakes falling from the sky. Duan Banxia walked down the street with a sweet smile. But when she looked up again, Jiu Xuanye had disappeared, causing her to break into uncontrollable tears. Suddenly, Jiu Xuanye appeared by her side and took her hand.
Seeing Jiu Xuanye’s hair covered in snow, Duan Banxia burst into laughter through her tears and suggested they invite everyone to a meal together before Jiu Xuanye left. Jiu Xuanye agreed. Duan Banxia invited Wen Jian, Chu Youhuang, and Sima Lingying to join them. Since Duan Yingheng was a registrar, he also knew Chu Youhuang, and Sima Lingying was brought along by Chu Youhuang while on official business.
Although Duan Banxia had long known Sima Lingying, Sima Lingying did not recognize her. Ting Zhou secretly asked Chi Xue about Jiu Xuanye’s situation, worried that Duan Yingheng would be displeased upon returning. When Duan Banxia and Sima Lingying went to grill skewers, Sima Lingying inquired about her relationship with Jiu Xuanye, realizing they were more than just friends. Duan Banxia asked Sima Lingying whether he and Chu Youhuang were friends, and Chu Youhuang quickly explained they were just friends.
Everyone was happy to know Jiu Xuanye and raised their cups to drink. Suddenly, Jiu Xuanye saw Father Jiu outside and hurriedly went to meet him. Father Jiu questioned who Jiu Xuanye truly was, as since meeting him, the Hidden Dragon Box had shown marks, indicating it had been used. This meant their connection was deep, which was why he came to ask.
Jiu Xuanye told Father Jiu that the Gate Between Realms would close in a few days, and he had to leave. Though he held a peachwood charm that allowed him to freely travel between realms, it had been used too many times and was now almost useless. Father Jiu felt sorrow for Duan Banxia; even though using the Chang Le Sword should have erased all memories, she still remembered everything. Now, they had to face a painful choice.
Father Jiu hoped he and Jiu Xuanye could meet again someday. Jiu Xuanye knelt to thank Father Jiu for raising him. When Jiu Xuanye returned, Duan Banxia had specially prepared a gift for Sima Lingying and Chu Youhuang as a wedding present, knowing Jiu Xuanye wouldn’t make it in time for their wedding.
Jiu Xuanye hugged Chi Xue, reminding him to take good care of the Jiu family’s parents and not to act recklessly in fights—if he couldn’t win, he should just run. Duan Banxia escorted Jiu Xuanye as he left. They walked hand in hand down the street. Curious, Duan Banxia asked about the Wuyou Realm. They looked up at the moon together.
Duan Banxia marveled at how beautiful the moon was and, hearing that there was a moon in the Wuyou Realm too, sighed that no matter how far apart they were, they would still be looking at the same moon. Duan Banxia let go of Jiu Xuanye’s hand. They said their goodbyes with smiles, but as they turned away, both couldn't help but cry.
Duan Banxia tried her best not to make a sound, but as she watched Jiu Xuanye leave, she couldn't stop herself from chasing after him. She watched Jiu Xuanye sail away on a small boat, and Jiu Xuanye gripped his hands tightly, not daring to look back, afraid that if he did, he would never leave. His tears blurred his vision. Beyond the mist in the Wuyou Realm lay the Wuyou Crossing.
Once through the fog, the other side would be reached. Jiu Xuanye bid farewell to Duan Banxia and left. In the Wuyou Realm, the Withering-Free Herb, nourished by the Moon Bugs, gradually revived. Watching the herbs come back to life, Jiu Xuanye smiled and strode forward.
