Yun Xiang went to discuss the whereabouts of the silver ship with Mo Bufan, but found that Mo Bufan was "using form to substitute for substance" and enjoying various hoof meat dishes. Mo Bufan was not on guard against being tricked by Yun Xiang, and admitted to using shadows to monitor the Tang Family Gambling House. He was confident that Lord Shao would not be able to find out anything.

For the next period of time, Kang Qiao sent someone to follow those who often went in and out of the Tang Family Gambling House. Unexpectedly, they were discovered by Kou Yuanjie, and the female assassin, Yue Wu, was ordered to kill them. Mo Bufan was saddened and angry to see his hard-trained shadow killed and vowed to capture these people as soon as possible.

Although this lead seemed to be cut off, Yun Xiang thought of a new lead, which was that smelting official ingots required a large supply of charcoal. If they started investigating from the charcoal, perhaps they could also find the location of the lair. That night, Yun Xiang thought back to his acquaintance with Shu Yanan and became more and more suspicious of her. He had asked Mo Bufan to investigate the orphan of the Shu family, but later received news that all members of the Shu family's escort bureau were killed, and there were no survivors left, meaning that Shu Yanan's orphan identity could not be confirmed.

Combining these details, Yun Xiang believed that Shu Yanan was likely from Ling Yuan. Later, Yun Xiang went to Shu Yanan's room to find her, but the room was lit but empty, and a strand of hair fell from the door frame when he pushed the door. As someone from Yun Tai, Yun Xiang was familiar with these methods, and he became even more convinced of Shu Yanan's identity.

Shu Yanan personally went to pass on the message to Kou Yuanjie, saying that Yun Xiang had already been watching the source of the charcoal and was only waiting for Ye Xiao to appear to buy it, so he should resolve this matter quickly. But when Shu Yanan returned to Liansheng Lane, she found broken hair on the floor of her room and realized that Yun Xiang had been there and suspected her, causing her inner pain and conflict.

As Tang's gambling house did not need further investigation, Yun Xiang and Mo Bufan teamed up to squat near a charcoal seller's house. They soon discovered that someone was buying large amounts of charcoal, so they decided to follow the charcoal carts to find the hiding place of the silver. Shu Yanan volunteered to go with them, and Yun Xiang intentionally brought her along to see what she would do. Surprisingly, Shu Yanan gave Mo Bufan ideas and strategies throughout the journey, and helped him to blockade the charcoal carts.

The charcoal carts were very cunning during their journey, and there were even several carts that were disguised. Yun Xiang accurately judged the direction, and assigned Kang Qiao to follow the caravan while entrusting Shu Yanan with an important task. Meanwhile, Liu Gongquan and Princess Mingzhu were also observing nearby. Bored with nothing to do, Princess Mingzhu disguised herself as a man and entered Liansheng Lane, only to be stopped by the Heavenly Tigers who said that the curfew was about to start.

Both groups closely monitored the caravan at night. Shu Yanan noticed Liu Gongquan and his group and immediately informed Yun Xiang. Mo Bufan was ready to seize the painting boat before those useless people did, but Shu Yanan believed that Liu Gongquan was a famous detective in Jiangnan and they should not act recklessly against him.
