The Legend of Taotie Episode 31 Recap
> The Legend of Taotie Recap
Ji Hairu, fearing the loss of the two people she loved most, personally pushed her sister, Ji Hairong, into the sea. Ji Hairong was consumed by the Twin Mushrooms, which absorbed her painful memories. Over time, the mushrooms began to mature by drawing the souls of those burdened with guilt. However, Liu Zhongxian did not marry Ji Hairu. Every time he saw her, he couldn’t help but think of Ji Hairong, leaving him despondent and restless.
Later, he met a woman who resembled Ji Hairu and married her instead. Yet even so, he was haunted by his memories and guilt in his dreams. After receiving a letter from Ji Hairu, he decided to come to this place to fulfill his lingering regrets. Upon seeing Ji Hairu, Liu Zhongxian recognized the depth of his sins and willingly walked toward Ji Hairong, begging her to consume him.
As Ji Hairong began devouring Liu Zhongxian, Zhu Chengbi immediately reminded Ji Hairu to follow through with their plan. Ji Hairu picked up a mirror infused with the essence of heaven and earth and shone it on Ji Hairong. Ji Hairong muttered, questioning whether her sister intended to harm her one last time. Ji Hairu’s psychological defenses collapsed, and she no longer wished to survive alone. She begged her sister to take her life as well.
Once the Twin Mushrooms consumed Ji Hairu, they reached full maturity and fell to the ground. Zhu Chengbi quickly moved to pick up the Twin Mushrooms, but Tan Yilu warned her to hand them over. If she didn’t, Chang Qing’s life would be in jeopardy. During a battle in an underground palace, Tan Yilu had implanted puppet strings into Chang Qing. With a small spell, he could turn Chang Qing into his puppet.
Confirming that the strings were indeed on Chang Qing, Zhu Chengbi pretended to hand over the mushrooms. At the same time, she severed the strings binding Chang Qing, cast a spell to shut the door, and snatched the mushrooms back from Tan Yilu. Zhu Chengbi finally obtained what she had been after. She immediately brought Chang Qing back to Tianxiang Tower, where she cooked the Twin Mushrooms into a broth and placed it by Chang Qing’s bedside.
Weak and frail, Chang Qing now understood why Zhu Chengbi had taken him to the Yaoguang Pool. It was all to obtain the Twin Mushrooms. However, witnessing how many lives the mushrooms had claimed, Chang Qing could not forgive Zhu Chengbi. He firmly refused to consume the mushrooms. Determined to save Chang Qing, Zhu Chengbi used magic to immobilize him. She only felt at ease after ensuring he had swallowed the Twin Mushrooms.
Chang Qing realized Zhu Chengbi’s genuine feelings for him, but he could not accept that she had sacrificed so many lives for his sake. He struggled out of bed, intending to leave Tianxiang Tower. Seeing him about to take his Divine Pen, Zhu Chengbi stopped him, asking him to leave the pen behind as a keepsake. Chang Qing nodded, left the pen, and walked away.
When Chang Qing’s Divine Pen lost its power earlier, Zhu Chengbi had worked tirelessly to restore it. She even had Ying Tao close Tianxiang Tower so she could venture into the icy wilderness with her maid to hunt for small spiritual beasts to revive the pen's power. In Wuxia, a neighboring country frequently harassed the borders. As Chang Qing walked through the streets, he saw widespread famine and suffering. Resolving to serve the people, he decided to join the army.
A true man, he believed, should strive to bring peace to the world. When he reached the military camp, the commander expressed disappointment upon learning that Chang Qing no longer had the Divine Pen. The once-proud Golden-Winged Bird of the army had been severely weakened after years of war, losing much of its combat ability. With dwindling supplies, a disheartened army, and insufficient food, defeat seemed inevitable. Meanwhile, Zhao Heng received an imperial edict commanding him to lead troops into battle.
However, his body was in poor condition. Tan Yilu suggested transferring vital energy to Zhao Heng daily, though it would involve immense pain. Not wanting to let his father down, Zhao Heng agreed. Each night, as his life was extended, he endured excruciating agony.
