The Legend of Taotie Episode 38 Recap
> The Legend of Taotie Recap
Chang Xiaoli arrived at Tianxiang Tower and quickly won Zhu Chengbi’s affection. When Zhu Chengbi heard that Xiaoli enjoyed a dish made with honey venom, she immediately got up to prepare it for her. With the cooling weather, Zhu Chengbi felt idle at Tianxiang Tower, as there were no demon beasts to deal with, leaving her with a sense of emptiness. Xiaoli suggested using ordinary ingredients to make hot pot, which sparked Zhu Chengbi’s interest.
She decided to host a hot pot feast for the entire city. Watching everyone savoring the hot pot with great enthusiasm, Zhu Chengbi suddenly realized her past mistake: even simple ingredients could create delicious dishes as long as they were made with heart. Recently, both Cui Yan and Zhu Chengbi noticed Xiaoli’s strange behavior. She was seen sneaking into Zhu Chengbi’s bedroom and stealing some honey venom from the kitchen.
Zhu Chengbi recalled that Chang Qing had once told her about his sister, who had gone missing in a fire years ago. Now, she wasn’t entirely sure this Xiaoli was truly Chang Qing’s sister. She found an excuse to send Xiaoli away. However, Xiaoli was sent by Bai Ze and could not leave before completing her mission.
Bai Ze had calculated that Zhu Chengbi would soften when she saw Chang Qing, so he deliberately informed Chang Qing that Xiaoli had returned to Tianxiang Tower. Hearing that his sister was alive, Chang Qing rushed to Tianxiang Tower without hesitation. At that moment, Xiaoli had packed her belongings and was preparing to leave. She was startled to see Chang Qing, and the two were overwhelmed with emotion.
Zhu Chengbi, seeing that Chang Qing intended to take Xiaoli to find another place to stay, suggested that they both stay at Tianxiang Tower. That night, Zhu Chengbi overheard Chang Qing and Xiaoli talking. Chang Qing promised to make up for all the hardships his sister had endured over the years. Zhu Chengbi shook her head helplessly—Chang Qing clearly didn’t understand Xiaoli’s current situation.
Lu Ying, worried about the recent safety issues at the Xunlie Division, feared that Suzaku might get hurt. He ordered his men to send Suzaku to Tianxiang Tower, believing it would be safer under Zhu Chengbi’s care. Unexpectedly, Suzaku mysteriously disappeared after just one day. With only five people at Tianxiang Tower, everyone became a suspect. Chang Qing refused to let Cui Yan and Ying Tao suspect his sister, leading to an argument among the three.
Zhu Chengbi proposed making a special soup that would compel anyone who drank it to tell the truth. Although Chang Qing didn’t suspect his sister, he agreed to let Xiaoli drink the soup to prove her innocence. Xiaoli, feeling uneasy and guilty, reluctantly drank it. The effects took hold quickly. To remain conscious, Xiaoli tightly gripped a sharp silver needle, stabbing her palm to stay awake. She then began banging her head against the wall with all her strength.
Chang Qing immediately stopped her from hurting herself further. While he outwardly scolded Zhu Chengbi, deep down, he had already begun to understand what was going on. Afterward, Chang Qing tended to Xiaoli’s wounds. Cui Yan couldn’t help but complain that Xiaoli’s behavior had deepened the conflict between Chang Qing and Zhu Chengbi. Zhu Chengbi disagreed, believing Chang Qing wasn’t foolish and had already noticed Xiaoli’s actions.
Not long after, Chang Qing came to Zhu Chengbi alone and told her he planned to send Xiaoli home once her health improved. He promised to return to help Zhu Chengbi face Bai Ze. Xiaoli, seeing how conflicted Chang Qing was, felt a pang of guilt. However, she recalled how Bai Ze had saved her from the fire and raised her.
Trusting Bai Ze completely, she believed his claim that Chang Qing had been influenced by Taotie and failed to help the demon beasts return home. Bai Ze instructed Xiaoli to complete the mission Chang Qing had left unfinished. The next day, Chang Qing prepared to take Xiaoli home. Zhu Chengbi received a note from Xiaoli and, though she found it odd, went to the agreed meeting place at the relay station.
Xiaoli deliberately sent Chang Qing to buy some pastries, leaving only herself and Zhu Chengbi. Once alone, Xiaoli’s expression turned vicious. She pulled out a dagger and attempted to assassinate Zhu Chengbi. However, Zhu Chengbi, being a powerful Taotie, couldn’t be harmed by an ordinary human. Zhu Chengbi drew her own blade in defense, but Xiaoli suddenly grabbed it and stabbed herself with it. Just as this happened, Chang Qing returned.
It seemed Xiaoli had calculated the timing perfectly, intending to provoke Chang Qing’s misunderstanding of Zhu Chengbi. Seeing his sister’s chest wound and the blade in Zhu Chengbi’s hand, Chang Qing broke down, holding Xiaoli in despair. Zhu Chengbi tried to explain, but her words fell on deaf ears. After burying his sister, Chang Qing went straight to Bai Ze, kneeling and pleading with him to reveal a way to eliminate Zhu Chengbi.
