The Legend of Taotie Episode 40 (Ending) Recap
> The Legend of Taotie Recap
Bai Ze sensed a turning point in Zhu Chengbi's fate and immediately flew to find her. Zhu Chengbi had believed that consuming the Xianxing Grass would break the five-poison seal. However, Bai Ze revealed with pride that she had fallen into another trap. The Xianxing Grass would only accelerate the fusion of the Qilin blood with Zhu Chengbi's veins.
As the fusion deepened, Zhu Chengbi would become the envoy to summon the Black Qilin King, ultimately aiding Bai Ze in opening the Tongtian Passage. Hearing this revelation, Zhu Chengbi was horrified—this had all happened because of the information Chang Qing had unintentionally passed to her, leading her to fall into Bai Ze's trap. Chang Qing rushed to rescue Zhu Chengbi. When he found her, she was extremely weak.
He carried her back to Tianxiang Tower and swore never to leave her side again. Recently, frequent earthquakes had been occurring. Chang Qing suspected that Bai Ze was behind them and suggested to Zhu Chengbi that they open the Tongtian Passage. Zhu Chengbi immediately refused, explaining that opening it would release the Black Qilin King, a being even more terrifying than Bai Ze. Zhu Chengbi looked at her palm, where a mark symbolizing life had appeared.
She knew that once the Qilin blood in her body fused with her heart, it would summon the Black Qilin King. Anxious and determined not to become a pawn of evil, Zhu Chengbi resolved to resist. Meanwhile, Chang Qing began having nightmares. He faintly sensed that the Black Qilin King's seal was on the verge of being broken.
Noticing a string of prayer beads left behind by Lian Deng next to his pillow, Chang Qing began to realize that Lian Deng might have been trying to send him a message in his dreams. Chang Qing went to Zhu Chengbi’s room and saw her holding a dagger, seemingly ready to take her own life. Heartbroken, he knew he had to suppress his emotions—this was not the time for impulsiveness.
Chang Qing softly called Zhu Chengbi to come downstairs for a meal. At this critical moment, Wu Changgong arrived, sensing the disturbance from Lianxin Tower. He came to assist Zhu Chengbi. Speaking privately with him, Zhu Chengbi revealed her situation and begged Wu Changgong to end her life at the right time to prevent the world from becoming a living hell.
Meanwhile, Chang Qing received a summons from Bai Ze, who informed him that the next day would mark the death anniversary of Taotie. On that day, Taotie would summon the Black Qilin King and open the Tongtian Passage. Chang Qing was filled with regret, realizing that he had unknowingly contributed to Zhu Chengbi's downfall. Seeking answers, Chang Qing ran to Lianxin Tower and told Lian Deng everything that had happened, hoping for guidance.
Wu Changgong appeared, and Chang Qing begged him to turn back time to the moment before he ever met Zhu Chengbi. Wu Changgong shook his head, explaining that although Lian Deng could have reversed time before, he chose not to interfere with fate. Wu Changgong added that he, too, could not alter the natural order. He hinted that the prayer beads in Chang Qing’s possession might already hold the answer.
Chang Qing suddenly understood—he had dreamed of sacrificing himself alongside the Black Qilin King. If he could save Zhu Chengbi by taking her place, he would gladly do so. Knowing that the next day would be her final one, Zhu Chengbi personally cooked a meal for Chang Qing. Under the moonlight, they reminisced about their first meeting.
Chang Qing cherished the fleeting peace and confessed that the time he spent at Tianxiang Tower with Zhu Chengbi was the happiest of his life. That night, the tower was filled with allies preparing for the upcoming battle—Xuanceng bees, Zhang Ruoxu, Lu Ying, and Wu Changgong, all ready to fight. Zhu Chengbi and Chang Qing hid their mutual determination to sacrifice themselves for the other's sake, each hoping to ease the other's burden. That night, they sat side by side.
Chang Qing asked Zhu Chengbi what her happiest moment was. Both silently promised in their hearts to cherish life, even in the other’s absence. At dawn, Chang Qing, clutching the prayer beads, climbed step by step to the top of Lianxin Tower, ready to embrace death. Bai Ze arrived with his demon beasts, prepared for a final showdown. Zhu Chengbi also reached Lianxin Tower, unwilling to let Chang Qing sacrifice himself like Lian Deng had.
However, Chang Qing handed her the prayer beads and urged her to pursue her own desires, assuring her that he would return someday. Merging with Lianxin Tower, Chang Qing unleashed a brilliant golden light. All the demon beasts turned to ash. Bai Ze, despite all his scheming, was ultimately defeated by justice and goodness. Blossoms of peach flowers gracefully fell from the sky, creating a breathtaking scene.
In the aftermath, Zhu Chengbi cultivated a garden in the rear courtyard, filled with flowers and trees. Every day, she sat on the rooftop, gazing at the fragrant petals and recalling the joyful times she spent with Chang Qing.
