Liu Chen and Shen Jinghong were chatting together when Shen Jinghong mentioned the system of rewarding loyal subjects. He believed that ordinary people, without the protection of this system, would remain stagnant for their entire lives. He also told Liu Chen that prominent families sought to create a vast network of interests in the court through intermarriage. He spoke about the disadvantages of these powerful families, leading Liu Chen to decide that if they were not removed, they would become a perpetual threat.

Mu Zhuohua prepared a bath for Liu Yan, and as she looked at the scars on his back, she realized that his visit to the brink of death at Guimen Pass must have been more than just an ordinary experience. Zhi Jian called Guo Juli out and offered her a dessert made from papaya as a gesture of affection, but Juli was too engrossed in eating to pay much attention.

While Liu Yan was sleeping, he dreamt of the words spoken by the Empress Dowager. He woke up suddenly and told Mu Zhuohua about his dream, recounting the situation on the day of the palace coup. At that time, he had been overwhelmed and hadn't had the energy to think deeply about it. Now, as he recollected, he noticed several inconsistencies. He told Mu Zhuohua about his doubts, especially concerning the Battle of Juma River and the substitution of the will. He suspected that someone had been behind these actions and remembered a eunuch who had been with Liu Ju and had committed suicide after Liu Ju's death. Liu Chen, under the influence of Shen Jinghong's instigation, decided to swiftly remove the influential families. Liu Yan visited the Empress Dowager, believing she held information about the true mastermind behind the Battle of Juma River. However, he found that the Empress Dowager could no longer speak. He handed her a piece of paper and a pen, urging her to write down the name of the other mastermind. In response, the Empress Dowager bit his arm.

Back at home, Liu Yan described his visit to the Empress Dowager to Mu Zhuohua. She noticed the bite mark on his arm and recalled that Princess Rou Jia had a similar mark on her arm. She explained to Liu Yan that this was a clue from the Empress Dowager, hinting at the true mastermind. Mu Zhuohua informed Liu Yan about the bite mark on Princess Rou Jia's arm. Together, they pieced together Princess Rou Jia's actions and realized that she was involved in everything. He Xin came to report to Liu Yan that the eunuch by Liu Ju's side also had connections with Princess Rou Jia. This provided an explanation for the substitution of the will. Mu Zhuohua wondered if Shen Jinghong, who had shown great admiration for Princess Rou Jia, might also be manipulated and hoped he wouldn't suffer the same fate as Xue Xiaotang.
