The Longest Promise Episode 40 (Ending) Recap
> The Longest Promise Recap
Zhi Yuan regained consciousness momentarily and realized that he could not let Xu Yao destroy Cloud Wasteland even if it meant his own death. However, he was unable to end his life under Xu Yao's control. Xu Yao continued to manipulate Zhi Yuan, offering to help him regain the Earth Ring in exchange for his cooperation. Zhi Yuan agreed, hoping that with Xu Yao's help, he could find the Sea Emperor.
Shi Ying brought Zhu Yan to the Jia Lan Imperial City, but they were surprised to learn that the Lord and Lady of Chi had committed suicide out of fear. Zhu Yan hurried back to her home, where she discovered that Zhi Yuan had sent a letter to Kongsang. He offered to stop the war if the Chi Tribe handed over their princess to him, otherwise, he would attack Jia Lan. This letter caused unrest among the Chi Tribe, and the Lord and Lady of Chi sacrificed themselves to protect their people. Feeling guilty for the loss of her parents, Zhu Yan blamed herself.
Zhu Yan arranged for the bodies of the Lord and Lady of Chi to be sent back to Tianji Wind City. Grieving the loss of her parents, she sought solace from Shi Ying, who comforted her and advised her to live on like the West Wild Tree. After Zhu Yan rested, Shi Ying went to the palace to see the King of Bei Mian, requesting the authority to lead the troops and help Zhu Yan repel the Ice Tribe's rebellion. Shi Ying informed the King that the current Zhi Yuan was controlled by Xu Yao and manipulated by the power of Heaven and Earth, turning the Ice Tribe's soldiers into mindless beings. Shi Ying vowed to recover the power of Heaven and Earth before Xu Yao found the Sea Emperor and brought calamity to Kongsang. The King of Bei Mian was concerned about Shi Ying's willingness to face the gods in battle, but Shi Ying believed that if the gods enjoyed the suffering of the people, they didn't deserve to be gods. He was determined to become the first mortal to slay a god.
Zhu Yan and Shi Ying agreed to meet at the top of the White Tower. When Shi Ying arrived, he found that Zhu Yan had prepared simple wedding attire for them. They held a simple wedding ceremony on the White Tower, toasting and drinking to each other's happiness. Shi Ying regretted not being able to give Zhu Yan a lively wedding and promised to hold a grand celebration for her once the crisis in Kongsang was resolved. They spent their wedding night together, but the next day, Shi Ying discovered that Zhu Yan had left a farewell letter. Zhu Yan decided to deal with Zhi Yuan on her own and promised to return safely.
When Shi Ying tried to find Zhu Yan, he was summoned back to the palace as the King of Bei Mian's condition worsened. The King handed the governance of Kongsang to Shi Yu and expressed his regret and desire for Shi Ying to take care of Shi Yu and protect Kongsang. Shi Ying finally called the King of Bei Mian "father" and promised to look after Shi Yu. After the King passed away peacefully, Shi Ying visited Zhu Yan, who had disguised herself as Yao Yi. Zhu Yan had decided to erase all her memories so that she could completely become Yao Yi and not be hindered by her past identity. Shi Ying was saddened by her decision but respected her choice.
Shi Ying realized that the Heaven and Earth power was crafted by the Star Emperor and decided to use the Seven Celestials to try to control the Earth Ring's power. Although he couldn't fully control it, he managed to disrupt Zhi Yuan's ability to manipulate the army with it.
With the loss of the Earth Ring's power, Zhi Yuan tried to trap Shi Ying and Zhu Yan in a Luminous Illusion, but with the power of the Heaven and Earth ring, they managed to fight back. At a crucial moment, Zhi Yuan broke free from Xu Yao's control and apologized to Zhu Yan before choosing to end his life along with Xu Yao.
As Zhi Yuan's spirit dissipated, Xu Yao attempted to manipulate Zhu Yan, who was tormented by guilt for her parents' deaths and the harm caused by her destiny. Xu Yao repeatedly manipulated her, but Shi Ying reminded Zhu Yan that meeting her was the happiest thing in his life. He kissed her to awaken her consciousness, but Xu Yao also took control of Shi Ying's body. To seal Xu Yao's spirit, Shi Ying decided to sacrifice himself. He handed the Jade Bones to Zhu Yan and asked her to kill him so that Xu Yao would be trapped within him forever.
Zhu Yan couldn't bear to watch Shi Ying die in front of her again and was unable to do it herself. Shi Ying reassured her that this was his mission as a practitioner of magic to save the people. With tears in her eyes, Zhu Yan hugged Shi Ying and drove the Jade Bones into his heart. Shi Ying told her that he would come back to see her every year when the Snow Han Wei bloomed.
As the Snow Han Wei bloomed, Zhu Yan visited the place where she first met Shi Ying in the palace and left the Snow Han Wei petals that Shi Ying had given her. To her surprise, the petals transformed into golden light in the sunlight, and Shi Ying appeared before her once again. They reunited in the season of falling flowers, where their love story began and where they met again.
