Lu Jiaxue, in a fit of emotion, grabbed Luo Yining's arm and asked how she knew he had a gambling problem. There was only one person in the world who thought that of him, and that person was Meimei! Luo Yining, looking into his eyes, realized that he wouldn’t let her go until he got an explanation, so she made up a lie. She claimed that the "Meimei" girl Lu Jiaxue mentioned was actually her maid.

Back then, this maid had helped care for a blind man at a villa and had shared her story with Luo Yining. Originally, Luo Yining had intended to return the maid’s indenture contract when she got married, but one day, the maid returned covered in blood! Luo Yining went on to say that this Meimei had true feelings for that man but tragically died at his hands.

Before her death, the maid gave Luo Yining a white jade pendant with the character "Lu" engraved on it, and now it seemed like the man was indeed Lu Jiaxue! Desperate to know where Meimei had been buried, Lu Jiaxue asked Luo Yining for the location. Luo Yining, word by word, told him that she was buried at the villa and that no tombstone was erected to forget the past.

Lu Jiaxue felt as if his heart was being torn apart, and seeing Luo Yining’s expression, he believed she wasn’t lying. As Lu Jiaxue was lost in thought, Luo Yining quickly left the marquis' residence. That night, Luo Yining, drinking away her sorrows in the pavilion, encountered Luo Shenyuan, who was returning late. She had already had quite a bit to drink, and at this point, she didn’t care about the rules and restrictions of the day.

She threw herself into Luo Shenyuan’s arms, asking if he would always protect her, and if bad people came, would he stand by her side? Luo Shenyuan gently patted her shoulder, reassuring her that they would always be there for her. Luo Yining nodded, thinking they were just brother and sister, unaware of the thoughts in Luo Shenyuan’s heart—this was the girl he cared for deeply, and he would never fail her!

With the imperial exams approaching, Luo Yilian noticed her brother Xuanyuan growing more and more anxious. Ever since Luo Shenyuan had been added to the Luo family’s genealogy and began studying alongside Xuanyuan and the others, Xuanyuan had been feeling immense pressure. To help her brother eliminate any obstacles, Luo Yilian had her maid prepare a few items.

Then, taking advantage of Luo Yining's lack of caution, she tampered with some of the things Luo Shenyuan would need for the exam. Luo Yining, observing how Luo Yilian had been diligently delivering snacks to her brothers' courtyards over the past few days, knew she was up to something. She preemptively instructed her maid, Xuezhi, to be on alert the next time Luo Yilian visited. As expected, Luo Yilian did visit Luo Shenyuan’s study, Jimo Pavilion.

Luo Yining carefully inspected the items Luo Shenyuan would take to the exam and quietly informed Lin Hairu of her findings. As the Luo family’s scholars prepared to enter the examination hall, Lin Hairu deliberately suggested to Luo Chengzhang that he check what the children were taking with them, just to avoid any mistakes. Luo Chengzhang inspected each person’s belongings and paid special attention to Xuanyuan’s bundle. He found that Xuanyuan’s bag contained two extra candles.

Upon closer inspection, he discovered that someone had hidden cheat sheets inside the candles! If the examiners found out, Xuanyuan would face severe punishment, losing his qualification to ever take the exams again. Furious, Luo Chengzhang demanded to know what was going on. Trembling, Luo Xuanyuan knelt down, insisting he had no idea how it happened. Luo Yilian, pale-faced, immediately knelt before their father, claiming that her brother was completely innocent.
