The Rise of Ning Episode 36 Recap
> The Rise of Ning Recap
Due to the Yang Ling case, the fleet that Wang Yuan and Lu Jiaxue had painstakingly built was destroyed. Lu Jiaxue presented the final verdict to Wang Yuan, who, upon seeing Yang Ling’s confession, felt relieved, believing the hidden danger had been eliminated. Since Lu Jiaxue had also been involved in the Tea and Horse case, he insisted that Wang Yuan burn all evidence in his presence. Reluctantly, Wang Yuan complied and burned the documents.
The Duke assessed Luo Shenyuan based on Yang Ling’s case, concluding that he was not trustworthy. Yang Ling was Luo Shenyuan's fellow disciple, and their master, Teacher Liu, had also been implicated, forced to resign and return to his hometown. Luo Shenyuan not only failed to protect his teacher, but now, with Yang Ling sentenced to be executed after autumn, he showed no reaction. Deciding that Luo Shenyuan was unreliable, the Duke instructed Luo Yining to stay away from him.
Luo Yining wanted to explain but held her tongue, knowing Luo Shenyuan’s true intentions and viewing this as a temporary measure. Wang Yuan had previously taken an order to deliver goods by a certain date, and with his fleet gone, he had to find a reliable candidate. Now suspicious of Lu Jiaxue, he decided to test Luo Shenyuan.
Soon after, Wang Yuan’s men raided Luo Shenyuan’s tavern and searched his ships, discovering a box of exotic jewels and high-quality spices onboard—both forbidden goods. Seeing his shop raided and his jewelry confiscated, Luo Shenyuan understood Wang Yuan’s intentions and went to the Wang residence, humbling himself and pleading for leniency, promising his unwavering loyalty in the future. Now holding leverage over Luo Shenyuan, Wang Yuan asked him outright if he was a disciple of Chen Jiuheng.
Anticipating Wang Yuan’s suspicions, Luo Shenyuan openly admitted it, explaining that he had felt unappreciated in the Luo family, so he secretly learned from the teacher at the door, unaware that the teacher was Chen Jiuheng. Regarding Chen Daoyuan, he only wanted to repay his teacher’s kindness.
Luo Shenyuan’s response left no room for suspicion, so Wang Yuan then tasked him with killing the Duke, stating that if he wanted to join his side, he had to sever all ties with the Duke. Luo Shenyuan was alarmed, understanding this as Wang Yuan’s first test. He agreed to the task, then began strategizing. The Duke planned to take Luo Yining to make offerings, and Wang Yuan learned of this.
However, on that day, the Duke was detained by official matters, leaving Luo Yining to go alone. During Lu Jiaxue’s routine city defense inspection, he overheard rumors about the Duke’s carriage being startled, nearly causing it to fall off a cliff. Alarmed, and fearing Luo Yining might be in the carriage, he swiftly rode towards the scene. Suddenly, Luo Yining’s sedan was ambushed by an assassin who, wearing a black mask, pierced the sedan with a sword, nearly killing her.
Looking up, Luo Yining recognized the familiar eyes of the attacker—it was Luo Shenyuan. Time seemed to freeze for a moment until Lu Jiaxue’s carriage approached. Luo Shenyuan continued his assassination attempt, ruthlessly striking at Luo Yining. In the chaos, he injured her shoulder, but Lu Jiaxue, determined to protect her, fiercely fought back, severely injuring Luo Shenyuan and killing all of Wang Yuan’s men who had been secretly guarding him.
Following this incident, the Duke severed ties with Luo Shenyuan, and Luo Yining never saw him again. This was exactly what Luo Shenyuan intended, hoping to prevent his actions from implicating them. Luo Shenyuan successfully passed the test, earning Wang Yuan’s trust, who even planned to grant him the position of Assistant Minister of the Dali Court. Observing Luo Shenyuan’s dual strategy, Lu Jiaxue warned him not to become overly confident.
